What about Guns and roses "november rain" which is like 12 minutes I think....my cousin and his old girlfriend had this as "they're song" which always amused me greatly. I was at a wedding social like 2 years ago and this song played and they danced the whole time in a slow drunkin shuffle. I kept thinking about what a poor choice for a relationship song that was. Lucky for him they broke up.
Anyways, some of my long classics include
tubular bells - mike oldfield shine on you crazy diamond - pink floyd dazed and confused - zepplin poppy no good - terry riley last track on "ovalprocess" - oval sister ray - velvet underground
Here are some of my all-time favourites: VU - Sister Ray, What Goes On, Heroin, The Gift Yo La Tengo - Sunsquashed, Flying Lesson Husker Du - Reoccurring Dreams Pink Floyd - Interstellar Overdrive, Echoes Hawkwind - Born to Go Television - Marquee Moon Stereolab - Jenny Ondioline Trilogy - Sonic Youth CCR - Ramble Tamble Stooges - Dirt and of course... Neil - Like a Hurricane, On the Beach, Cortez the Killer, Down by the River, Cowgirl in the Sand
Before that moment you touched my lips That perfect feeling when time just slips Away between us on our foggy trip
My favorite long "songs" are William Basinski's. I think the shortest piece he's ever done has been just over 10 minutes (on Disintegration Loops III, if I'm not mistaken), and they stretch upwards to about 65 minutes (Silent Night).
Originally posted by mark f: I would respond to more of your posts Imprezu, but I'm on dial-up and it doesn't work very well at all for downloads or even listening to music. My computer plays music for 5-10 seconds, followed by 5-10 seconds of silence, and that repeats over and over.
As far as long songs, I've heard The Polyphonic Spree's "A Long Day", which, at 36 minutes, is probably about 35 too many for most people.
I'm not on dial-up anymore, so now I can listen to music better.
Break Dancing Paddy: I'd say you have a solid grasp of that "song". Welcome to the site.
"Naked Woman, Naked Man Where did you get that nice sun tan?"
Pink Floyd - Echoes, Dogs, Obscured by Clouds (if you can find live bootlegged versions) Mogwai - Christmassteps, Mogwai Fear Satan Led Zeppelin - Carouselumbra Centaur - In Streams The Mars Volta - Cygnus Vismund Cygnus, Cassandra Gemini (although it is split into movements)
Originally posted by RavingLunatic: Pink Floyd (who I've just started listening for the first time the last few days) has some great long ones like "Echoes" (at 23 minutes probably a bit too long)
No way, that's my favourite PF song ever! Anyways, I didn't notice until now that pretty much every song I listed was mentioned on page 2... which I skipped. How about 'Cups' by Underworld? Amazing song.
The Doors - The End "It hurts to set you free but you'll never follow me."
The Doors - When the Music's Over "When the music is your special friend dance on fire as it intends."
The Doors - The Soft Parade "When all else fails we can whip the horses eyes and make them sleep and cry."
Bob Dylan - Brownsville Girl "I know that she ain't you, but she's here and she's got that dark rythm in her soul." (I think that how it went)
Guns N' Roses - November Rain (I just like it and everybody does need somebody sometime.)
Keith Green - The Prodigal Son Suite "Father I've sinned, heaven to shame. I'm no longer worthy to call your name." (It's really the polar opposite of The End by the Doors. I've really disliked it at times, but repentance is a good thing. I just don't like the patriarchal aspect of it. It's still a beautiful song though.)
I'm definitely a lyrics person, but I still like songs for the music; I just can't explain why. That's why I only refer to lyrics in my reason for liking for each song.

When I was growing up, I was a big Emerson, Lake & Palmer fan, so they have tons of long songs, including "Fanfare for the Common Man" and "Pirates" from the "Works, Volume I" LP.
I never liked "Yes", but I believe their double album, "Tales from Topographic Oceans" has only one song per side.
On Led Zep's "In Through the Out Door" album, "Carouselambra" is a pretty long song that I think is very good.
Oh, I just remembered a great, long song, and one that is traditionally played around Thanksgiving. I'm of course talking about Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant."
BTW - Hate to disappoint Mike, but Led Zep's "Dazed and Confused" is closer to 8 minutes than 18 minutes. Although, because I don't think the song is that good, maybe it just SEEMED like 18 minutes!
I am glad to see someone mention "Alice's Restaurant". Also, could the final section of Abbey Road be considered one song?
