If Metacritic is any indicator(and I think it is) then men and women, in general have different tastes in music. I can't think of any women I know that have my same taste in music.
If you look at metacritc(music forums) almost all the members are male. That's gotta mean something.
Men are more "nerdy" about music - more obsessive, more "scientific". Most women don't compile lists like I do and they don't have two huge racks full of CDs in alphabetical order like I do. They don't care what year an album was made, or who was the producer and who played lead guitar on what track. I don't mean they treat music more lightly, but music is more just...enjoyment to women - something to bop along to.
This calls to mind the Steve Albini poker forum questionnare.
Some Girl Poster: "Not gay. Chicks listen to good music sometimes, too, you know."
Steve Albini: "Not straight ones in my experience, no they don't. You are either a lesbian, a dude, or you don't really like good music. This is a fact proven with science and charts."
-------------------------------------------------- Anatomy to me is a homesick stomach and a broken heart
What about gay dudes, Mr. Albini? They're "sraight women" or just dudes?
Has anyone else seen Diner and that heartbreaking/hilarious scene where the husband (Daniel Stern)/wife (Ellen Barkin) let it all hang out about music grouping, genreizing, rating, etc.?
"Naked Woman, Naked Man Where did you get that nice sun tan?"
My girlfriend has totally awesome taste in music.. although she's not adventurous about it. I essentially tell her what to listen to and she decides whether or not she likes it.
At one point on last.fm, two of my best friends were shown as "medium" compatibility with me, while both of their girlfriends and one of their sisters were all shown as "super" compatibility with me.
I blame my compatibility with girls on LastFM on Sufjan.
------ Aren't there any girls out their who like good music? I need to and want to meet them. My favorite bands are Overkill River, The Nife, Songs:Ohio, and Nuetral Milk Hotel. Please let me know if your into indy music and like to go to show's and drink beer's and makeout.
My wife, who fronted her own band for awhile and played guitar, has quite an extensive knowledge of music and impeccable taste. That said, she is not nearly as obsessive about it as most of us are. She loves arguing about lists, but would never (without much prodding) sit down and make one up.

"This is my main concern with Obama; what if he has been groomed since childhood to blend in with the zionists and infidels? What if he has been led along by a radical islamic terrorist organization and positioned to become an influential politician?
What if Obama gets into White House and turns out to be some crazy muslim terrorist? What do we do then? We'll be pretty screwed. It could happen." -- by some fucking nutjob
My girlfriend takes some of my recs on new music, and doesn't really listen to much of the crap she listened to before we met. But it takes way too long for her to absorb this stuff for her to keep up. I kind of feel like a bastard, because I can tell that I've made her rather uncertain and not a little jaded. I bet you're all shocked.

I actually feel the same way about this topic as I do about "lifestyle change". I've encountered virtually zero females who have, what I believe to be, great taste in music. Just like I know of virtually zero people who have -- really and actually -- changed their lifestyle to divert a health disaster. I know there are exceptions to this, but I've honestly never seen it personally.

Do you mean like quitting smoking or losing a bunch of weight to avoid a heart attack?

Haha, that's quite the backhanded self-compliment there.

Yeah, but enough about your sex life...oh...sorry...that's right...you were talking about music taste...
Women get pretty obsessive about babies, but that's about it. I love my GF and my MOM just as much as the next guy, but sometimes they are comically out-of-touch with the male universe they live in.
EDIT: Oh, and to stay on topic: My GF loves Bloc Party, MIA, The Stone Roses, Neko Case, and The Talking Heads mostly because of me. So... at least she tries.

Which is more likely: that "women" are categorically "out of touch" with the "universe," or that a small number of men who spend great amounts of time posting on an Internet music forum are out of touch with women?
