i did a search for this and nothing jumped out and screamed "hey i've been done before", so here we go...

on a couple other message boards i've seen this idea take off and yield fantastic results. essentially, i want to do a "rough guide to..." session, where you can strut your stuff about the music you know most intimately. the basic idea is to create a "rough guide" to a certain band, genre (can be an insanely specific genre, too, like glasgow synth-driven gay country if you want), year, place, WHATEVER. the rough guide is a tracklist that sums up whatever topic you've chosen, all fitting neatly onto an 80-minute disc (can be less, but no more). traditionally these go from 12-20 tracks but can be more or less depending on style and whatnot. it's supposed to be representative of your topic, giving someone ignorant to the style/whatever a "rough guide" of how to further pursue. this can really get going if people contribute enough, and can be really great if you take the time to actually track down some of this stuff.

some ideas to get you going:
-the rough guide to britpop (hey, include blur, suede, sfa, etc...i know there's a lot of you britpoppers out there)
-the rough guide to elephant six
-the rough guide to post-whitehouse noise
-the rough guide to corny solo projects recorded by Miles Davis 70s-era session musicians (corea, dejohnette, the list goes on)

be creative with it and it can be good good fun.

i guess i'll start off with one. i proudly choose a band from my past.

The Rough Guide to NOFX: the eternal skatepunks
1. Life O'Riley
2. The Moron Brothers
3. Beer Bong
4. Soul Doubt
5. Bob
6. Stickin In My Eye
7. Please Play This Song on the Radio
8. Linoleum
9. The Cause
10. The Brews
11. Philthy Phil Philanthropist
12. Whatever Didi Wants
13. August 8th
14. Kids of the K-Hole
15. Murder the Government
16. 180 Degress
17. All Outta Angst
18. Quart in Session
19. Take Two Placeboes and Call Me Lame
20. Franco Un-American
21. Olive Me
22. Kill All the White Man

I doubt anyone would care about this one in particular, but it essentially captures their progression and range of humor and attempted sincerity at times.

alright, hopefully this hasnt been done before. look forward to seeing some good rough guides

6. Blur - Country House

I put it into an order than seems to fit decently well in my head. All the songs are really great, try to find any you haven't heard if you can. It's a little Blur/Oasis/Pulp/Stones Roses heavy, but that's how it should be.

Generally Electric: A Rough Guide to Shihad.

1) Screwtop.
2) Stations.
3) You Again.
4) The Call.
5) Deb's Night Out.
6) Home Again (Live).
7) La La Land.
8) A Day Away.
9) My Mind's Sedate.
10) Wait And See.
11) Just Like Everybody Else.
12) The Metal Song.
13) Brightest Star (Live).
14) Bullitproof (Live).
15) All The Young Fascists.
16) Alive.

It was very hard culling it down to that number. If I were doing this my way, I'd do a 2-CD thing that included more stuff from The General Electric and Love Is The New Hate. Also, I've only got one song from the Pacifier album, and it's in a live version - this is because I don't like the Pacifier songs. Kthxbai.

Muddy's an obvious omission and certainly should be there. Off the top of my head I couldn't think of an electric track of his. I prefer his acoustic outings such as Folk Singer.

Is the omission there still?

ken, I pretty much agree with your list except for these two records. They just seem a little too out there for casual listeners to me. Neutral Milk Hotel in particular would probably scare most people away by the second song.
