I am looking to expand my playlist! I really am into modern rock (Breaking Benjamin, Seether, Nickelback, Three Days Grace, etc...) but I think I have tapped all my radio resources. Does anyone have a list of up and coming bands that are in this genre? POST IT PLEASE!!!

Try something NOT played on the "modern rock" radio...

Start with a healthy dose of the classics:

The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, The Velvet Underground, Bob Dylan.

Only after educating yourself on the classics, will you be able to find some nice "modern" music.

(Just a suggestion)

Well. I agree with you. I am a HUGE Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, CCR, etc, fan. And I already have those on my iPod. I guess I should have said I am looking for new up and coming bands. Not bands of the past. I already know about, and like them!

I'm having trouble coming up with a sarcastic enough reply for this thread. Give me a couple of hours and I'll have a really scathing Nickelback joke for you.

Edit: Wait, wait, I've got it. There's another thread on this forum called 'Horribly Bad Bands'. You're bound to find something there to your taste.

Listen to the man.

But don't forget, once you're cool, you have to categorically deny that you EVER read pitchfork.

I'd say you should give Sissy Spacek, Prurient, Merzbow, and Hanatarash a shot.

Seriously though, have you actually looked around these forums? You're kinda asking the wrong group of people...

Man, don't listen to them dude. It's good that you like music and are wanting to branch out and find more. I think the thing that is messing with people a little is that the only commonality between the bands you listed is that they are mainstream and played on the radio, which you already admitted.

I would suggest you start checking out the Blog world. Music blogs will give you new music and mp3s for your iPod and will give you some commentary and history to go along with the band and the music. And there are hundreds of them so you can find someone with a comon interest in music as you and visit it every few days.

Here's a quick list for you to start at.
Stereogum
I Guess I'm Floating
Butter Team
Gorilla Vs Bear
My Old Kentucky Blog
Sixeyes

And give everything a chance. It might take a while of listening to stuff you think is boreing or lame, before you find something you really like.

If you want a list of bands, here's something short: Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys, Cold War Kids, Interpol, Metric, Pela, Pinback, Rogue Wave, The Long Winters, The National, oh, and of course Wolf Parade.

You can look up all of these bands on The Hype Machine which will link you to blogs talking about the bands and songs.

Have fun.

well, if you like three days grace and nickelback there is little hope for you. but go to pitchforkmedia.com, read their yearly lists, and their 70s 80s and 90s lists, and get stuff from those. not only will you be a hipster (to some on this forum a pseudo faux pseudo hipster, but thats a different story), but you will actually like most of the music.

I think there was a day when we were all like that. Finding new bands outside of what the radio plays is a joy.

I'd suggest Spoon.

Kill your television...and radio

I'm certain if you start listening to some of this tasty 'indie' stuff, you will have no interest in Breaking Benjamin and the like. Good luck!

At work yesterday, I had to put up with listening to Nickelback all day. It's on some bloody furniture advert, it's on the radio, it's on a compilation being repeated ad nauseum in the cd bar. Anyway, the girls at work couldn't believe my aggressive opposition to the band, as they all love the song. So they asked me what music I liked, and I replied "There would be absolutely no point in telling you.". Because, of course, I am a music snob.

Anyway, if you like Nickelback, you'll probably like bands like Creed, Puddle of Mudd, Good Charlotte, Saving Abel, Lostprophets, and according to Lastfm, 3 Doors Down, Hinder, Saliva Eeker, Hoobastank, and Crossfade.

I would like to point out, however, that this is in no way a list of recommendations.

Check Lastfm... there are many, many more (a cold shiver just ran down my spine) of these types of bands. I reckon you're more likely to find what you want there, than here. Good luck.

Ok I've got something to say about that style of band. I've actually created a genre specificly for bands like that. I call it "Hick Rock." I can't stand it. Nickelback and Daughtry are two of the worst. There's 3 Doors Down and many more. Anyone know where I'm coming from?

You guys just chased another one away....

Anyway I would have suggested going the other direction and list some female vocalists. You have to diversify your ipod. Get some change up going here....some PJ Harvey, a dash of Stereolab (can't wait for Chemical Chords) a couple of Broken Social Scene records (for the all around sound...and female backup singing) throw in some Amps or Sonic Youth.

maybe he'll come back

I don't own an ipod. But if I did have one it would have 'and you will know us by the trail of the dead' on it and I think you might like them.
