I'm not sure if this will really work or not, but I was thinking it would be fun for people to post lyrics from songs and allow others to guess the artist and track. The important point here is NO CHEATING! Don't just copy the quote into google. If you do guess correctly, you get to put the next quote up.

Here's one to start:

"Please don't confront me with my failures, I had not forgotten them."

The quote that follows is my signature at the moment and is not intended to be part of thread. Sorry for any confusion

Great pick, Wastrel, but I'll let someone else guess it. Wouldn't want to monopolize a thread I started.

actually, the title of the song is "Holland, 1945", In The Aeroplane Over The Sea is the name of the album. but i guess you can have that one because you are the only person who responded.

Am I being as stupid as usual, or may I post a lyric here, since nothing seems to be going on?

"Let's all get up and dance to a song that was a hit before your mother was born. Though she was born a long, long time ago."

Excellent choice, mark. The Beatles, "Your Mother Should Know."

"I'm a high night flyer and a rainbow rider, A straight shootin' son of a gun.

Now Playing: Unbreakable on ABC. I'm keen to see the 7 1/2 minutes of The Village they promise.

I guess we really are each other's straight man. Either that or everybody else has so many better things to do. I came back on after Beltre's grand slam made it 8-1. Hey, LT, how come the Redbirds aren't coming to my team's aid against those crumbbum Giants? Come on, tomorrow is another day!

Anyhow, "Joy to the World" Three Dog Night. I almost spaced out and put Steve Miller Band "The Joker." That would have been embarrasing.

"It was a typical case of American blind justice."

As somebody on my Cardinals listserv said today, if we win 100 games this season, that still means we have to lose 62.

I figured the Giants series was going to be tough. If you can believe it, I'm actually pleased we were so close today. I was afraid our pitching wouldn't be nearly up to the challenge of the Giants' bats.

Still and all, our first back to back losses since June and tomorrow IS another day, albeit with a couple of starters sporting 4+ ERAs.

Arlo Guthrie, "Alice's Restaurant"

How about:

...To show that all's equal and that the courts are on the level/And that the strings in the books ain't pulled and persuaded...

Now Playing: Nothin'...it's LATE and I oughta be in bed like the rest of my household...

The one I heard long ago was you will win 60 and you will lose 60. It's what you do with the rest which means everything, and of course, it's spot-on. Also, what seems to be spot-on, is that, LT, you seem to use me as a mirror to come up with quotes, which I greatly appreciate, but the others might think that "something fishies going on." Not me, I say, keep it up, or maybe I'm the one who's inspired by you; I can't remember anymore.

Come on, jump into the morass of this thread. You won't drown; we'll pull you up if it gets too...cough..cough..suffocating.

Anyway, my answer is Bob Dylan/ Judy Collins "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Caroll

"There ain't no tits on the radio"

I think it's Scissor Sisters "Tits on the Radio." However, since I haven't actually heard the track, I'm not sure. It's actually kind of weird: I was just reading the allmusic review of the album before I hopped onto metacritic and, fortunately for "Tits on the Radio," it received the coveted allmusic check mark, and I rememberd it. Anyway, would I be correct to assume that, since you posted their lyrics, this band is definitely worth a listen, Mark?

To bring another game back to life, I'm gonna restart this one.

Keep in mind that the goal (if the thread is gonna stay active) is NOT to post the most obscure lyrics possible, but simply to post lyrics that people might know.

Let's start with an easy one:

"Phony Beatlemania has bitten the dust"

If you answer it, post the next set of lyrics. If you're wrong, you'll get a public flogging.

Sticking with the theme of really easy:

"Stairway to Heaven" Led Zep

Let's make these a tad harder...

"Pretty women out walking with gorillas down my street
From my window I'm staring 'til my coffee grows cold..."

"Is she really going out with him?"
Joe Jackson

A nice single but I'm staggered North Americans still seem to laud this band. Elvis Costello too? He's forgotten over this side of the pond (oh dear, I'll await the backlash).

ok folks I've given you two days - it's 'Cold Blooded Old Times' by Smog.

Nothing like as obscure, try this-

"And I have waited, the anticipation's got me glued
I am waiting for something to go wrong
I am waiting for familiar resolve
I am waiting for another repeat
Another diet fed by crippling defeat"

That's a Death Cab For Cutie song off Transatlantacism. I don't pay attention to song names when I'm listening to an album though, I generally just press play...do I need the song title to claim victory?

If not...

This one's really obscure so I'll try to pick the least obscure song on the album..

Baby, I don’t want to argue
Don’t even want to fight
I just want to love you
And hold you all the night
The message from the party
Nothing to do with how...
Try to keep it happy
Then depress yourself to cry
All I want to do is love you
You’ve got to move on up

Okay. Nobody's going to get it.

It's 'Astounded' by Bran Van 3000. I know not a lot of people have heard it, but I thought this one was okay because I think it got airplay in Canada.

This one's a bit tricky, but I know a lot of people will recognize it.

People try to put us down
Just because we get around
I don't need that fucking shit
Hope I die because of it

Well, it starts out like the Who's "My Generation", but I don't know about the last two lines even if they're naggingly familiar.

Oh Bob, that's an easy one. It's the live version of "My Generation" that closes Patti Smith's Horses.

Here's a favorite...

"Introducing the amazing Rockethead
You know what the deal is, dude"
