It's been hard for me to really get into anything new this year, but that's okay because I'm discovering stuff I've missed in the past... Harmony In Ultraviolet - Tim Hecker Endless Summer - Fennesz Venice - Fennesz Songs From Before - Max Richter Burial - Burial Untrue - Burial (still one of my favorites from 2007) Lodger - David Bowie Scary Monsters - David Bowie Liquid Swords - GZA Ironman - Ghostface Killah Fishscale - Ghostface Killah Return To The 36 Chambers (The Dirty Version) - Ol' Dirty Bastard N****, Please - Ol' Dirty Bastard Only Built 4 Cuban Lynx - Raekwon Tical - Method Man 36 Chambers - Wu-Tang Clan Illmatic - Nas Yeah, this whole ambient/hardcore rap/Bowie phase has been going on for about two months, but I think that's just because I recently realized how much I love the genres. I've been taking the time to dig deep and get to know them a bit.

Really, really nice list. I especially love all of the rap mentions. It sounds a lot to what I said here a week ago. Good choices.

Since i've acquired a ridiculous amount of music recently, i decided to artificially limit the selection of CDs i can listen to until i've got a grasp on everything within the group. So, i've chosen a selection of brand new and a selection of old but still mysterious (albums i haven't explored to their full potential), as well as a few old classics in case i get overwhelmed by too much "new". They are:
David Axelrod - s/t Bark Psychosis - ///CODENAME:dustsucker Joy Division - Closer Latin Playboys - Dose John Maus - Love Is Real Kool G Rap - 4,5,6 Sparks - Kimono My House Siouxsie and the Banshees - The Scream Nick Cave - From Her To Eternity Dillinger Escape Plan - Ire Works The Electric Prunes - Mass In F Minor Ghost - In Stormy Nights Gong - Flying Teapot TV On The Radio - Return To Cookie Mountain Weather Report - Heavy Weather Espers - II Evangelicals - The Evening Descends Sonic Youth - Goo Scott Walker - The Drift Burial - Untrue
i'm not sure what the point of restricting myself to 20 albums is.. maybe it's because i remember the days of my small CD collection with some fondness (and maybe it's because i like a challenge), but there should be enough there to keep me occupied for a while.

I had a great day of listening yesterday. I listened to: Okkervil River - "Down the River of Golden Dreams" Okkervil Rive - "The Stage Names" Laura Marling - "Alas I Cannot Swim" Murder By Death - "Red of Tooth and Claw" The Battle of Land and Sea - s/t Peter and the Wolf - "Lightness" I am really going through another big Okkervil River phase. I am also going through my yearly "Down the River of Golden Dreams" where I earnestly believe that it is the best Okkervil River album and maybe the best album of the 2000s. The Battle of Land and Sea is a really underrated band and great for fans of Cat Power. "Lightness" is probably my favorite album ever and "Alas I Cannot Swim" is probably a top ten album for this year.
Nothing stops a party barge...

For the past five days or so it has been all Bright Eyes' Digital Ash in a Digital Urn. Whether it's on vinyl here in my house or on CD in my car, it's all I have been listening to. It really is an underrated/overlooked great album. Also, at the gym, I have played the past few albums on my walkman (that's right, a big bulky discman because I don't own an MP3 player) and they. pump. me. up.: Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen MaryWeezer - PinkertonMuse - Black Holes & RevelationsSunset Rubdown - Random Spirit LoverYeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever to Tell

Listened to today:
Beta Band - 3 EP's Jim O'Rourke - Insignificance Animal Collective - Water Curses EP Dodos - Visiter
Pretty good stuff. About half of the 3 EP's hasn't aged very well. The rest is pretty great. I put it on after watching parts of High Fidelity on cable this weekend. I love that scene. "I will now sell five copies of The Three EPs by The Beta Band" And then all of the head bobbing. Great scene.

Richard Buckner - Since
Buckner is just so damn good. He's never done anything but good albums, and this one is great.
Iron & Wine - SHepherd's Dog Bonus tracks (which I wasn't aware of until yesterday). They're both very good. Beam is a songwriting genius.
Dan Friel - Ghost Town
This sounds like nothing I've heard before. Strange mixture of harsh yet somehow comforting electronic noises, singing saw, and melody. Cokemachineglow raved over it.
