I agree with you. I love Elliott Smith's music but it is very depressing. I saw a vinyl copy of his self-titled album at a new record store here in town but I didn't buy it because I knew it would only make me more sad. Kind of dumb of me too because I already own the CD version.
Lately, I have come to the realization that I do like Wolf Parade, so I have been listening to their first album a lot. Though I still love Spencer Krug's stuff much more, I am starting to really like Dan Boeckner's music as well.
I am also really into anything Wu-Tang Clan related lately. I have been playing everything from their catalog as well as music from members that released solo stuff including classics from my favorite MCs: Raekwon, the GZA and Ghostface Killah.
Amplive Rainydayz Remixes Dork and an undead Twinkie suggested I check this out. It's an In Rainbows remix (sort of) album with a couple hip-hop guest spots (Deltron being the standout). After first listen, this seems really excellent. Here's the free zip file.
