In the last two days, aside from new music, I've listened to:
Onelinedrawing - Sketchy EP #1 Dismemberment Plan - Change Radiohead - Hail to the Thief Tree Wave - Cabana EP
I massively underrated Change and Hail to the Thief. I hadn't listened to either in many months, and I never realized until now how good those two records are. Both jumped up double digits in my best-of-the-00's list, and that doesn't happen often.
That Onelinedrawing EP is stellar as well. Jonah Matranga has one of my favorite singing voices. Guitar-and-voice songs don't get much better than "Better Than This" of "14-41" from that EP.
I'll probably say something about Tree Wave in the Electronica/Dance forum, but I really like this debut EP. They use old-type electronic instruments and smooth female vocals. The melodies are subtle. They don't grab you right away, but with repeated listens they really sink in and I've found myself really enjoying this EP. Highly recommended.

Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One. Much like ...And Then the Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out, I like some songs from this album, but overall it's a bit too boring for my taste. I'll take American Analog Set over these guys any day.
Jose Gonzalez - Veneer. I don't understand the lukewarm reviews of this record. I think it's fantastic. It'll probably make my top 10 this year. Yes, it's basically a guy trying to sound like Nick Drake circa Pink Moon, but is that such a bad thing?
Wolf Parade - Apologies to Queen Mary. I've given this record 2 and a half listens in the past two days, and much like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, I just don't get the hype. Seems very average to me. I can't even name any standout tracks. And I don't like the singers' voices.

Fair enough since we have different musical tastes, but no way, José. If you think that's boring, try Painful or Electr-O-Pura

I've been playing We Are the Party by Devil Party Anthems, Inc. a LOT lately. I think it's the best CD of the year so far. This is not a well known band yet, so here's a link where you can check it out: http://www.devilpartyanthemsinc.com

Really, the best cd of the year so far? Are the songs on their cd different than the ones on the website? Very cool graphics on the website though...

Yes, I DO think it's the best CD of the year. The songs on the CD are different mixes than the ones on the web site. I must confess that I'm not totally objective in my praise of the CD since I am quite close to the members of the band. However, I believe that most listeners will agree that it's one of the best party records every written. It's a "concept" record and the concept is "let's party!" I think it's a lot of fun.

Lately, I've been listening to non-album tracks by three of my favorite bands: Grandaddy, Jason Molina, and Radiohead. I made some mixes out of these songs, and they are about as good as any of their full-length albums. It takes some time to winnow everything down, but the reward is worth it for these guys.

I'm spinning, in a 3 part rotation, the new one by Mike Viola, the Toms self-titled reissue, and Eugene Edwards.
Thanks to LT for the recommendation on Eugene...really, really nice power pop!

Thought I'd give this thread a bump
Lately I've been on a big replacements-influenced bands kick.
Mostly listening to Replacements- Pleased to Meet Me Lucero- That Much Further West Slobberbone- Everything you thought... Various Will Johnson projects
I've also been playing a good amount of Steve Wynn - Here Come the Miracles Dream Syndicate- Days of Wine and Roses Lots of Vic Chesnutt Meat Loaf - Bat out of Hell, because it is important to remember that no matter how over the top any album tries to go, Bat Out of Hell will always have gone bigger.

I have been on a Ted Leo and Spoon kick of late. From Ted Leo, I've mainly been listening to Hearts of Oak and Shake the Sheets, but I've mixed in a little Tyranny here and there. With Spoon, Gimme Fiction and Series of Sneaks have been the tastes of choice.

My daughter has been on a Dylan kick, so I've been listening to lots and lots of Dylan, mostly his first decade and his last decade.

If you want Replacements-y stuff, KLT, check out a record (you should be able to find it used) called Bazooka by The Star Spangles. It's a little glammier than the 'mats, but HEAVILY influenced by them. My current playlist, as I'm grading a stack of papers on Just War theory, is mostly made up of Lambchop ( Aw C'mon/No You C'mon) with some East River Pipe thrown in and, for kicks, the new one from Elbow.

I really tried to get on a Dylan kick recently, to no avail. I found a bunch of new CDs of his for 6 bucks and scrounged them up. I owned or listened to about 8 of his albums. And the only two that I really enjoyed were Highway 61 Revisited and 1997's Time Out of Mind. Maybe I just don't get into the old style folk music. I've listening to REM's Murmur, the new Thelonous Monk Quartet W/Coltrane album, and Smog's Knock Knock in the last 24 hours.
