This may be the funniest post I've read in months. Good on you, Fitz!

My last couple of girlfriends have been in the ipod/itunes era. They have had vastly different tastes than I (one of them loved show tunes, no lie!), but at the same time weren't as passionate about music as I am/was.
I started by really trying to pinpoint the types of music they like. Any time something came on that they liked, I filed it away in my brain. With each new addition of a "liked" song, I made tiny little connections, helping me understand their tastes and what they would potentially enjoy. I then set about making a playlist on itunes, appropriately titled "girlfriend approved" and filled it with 100-200 songs that I already liked, and that they would like too (based on my calculations).
That makes both parties happy, it's fun to do and, best of all...it works.
I agree with Nhaz's post too, there's lots of country that both of you could like simultaneously. Try the Band out.

That's beautiful, Mags. You were their very own, personal last.fm!

i do the same thing but with friends and family. with time, i know what each one likes and when i'm with them, i play certain songs they'll like and i'll subtlely slip in a song they don't know but that might open up their tastes, hoping that they'll go "oh...that sounds nice, who is that?"
Mix a little folly with your plans: It is sweet to be silly at the right moment.

I'd casually ask her if she digs Charlie Rich. If the answer's "yes", help her pack.

She answered "yes". I asked her to leave, told her I can't date a woman who listens to country. For me, it's a deal breaker. She threw one of her cowboy boots at my head, then she left.

Well then, you can send her my way, I dig some of Charlie Rich's stuff.

I don't man. She gets violent when she's angry. You sure?

hudson, i sympathize completely with your inability to cope with country music. it's been a deal-breaker before for me too. my personal policy is, if i force her to listen to whiskeytown and if she tells me that she likes toby keith/brooks and dunn/faith hill/whatever and dislikes whiskeytown, i fake going into cardiac arrest, and pay off a physician to tell her i've passed. it's better this way.

HAHAHA!! I've always found mixtapes to be a great way to get your girl into your music. My last girlfriend didn't know music existed off the radio but I managed to get her to fall in love with Elliott Smith and Junior Boys (among others). My current girlfriend, like I mentioned earlier, has very similar music taste but doesn't explore as much (now she's starting to since I explained torrents to her) so I've used mixes to turn her onto more obscure and older stuff. You'll be amazed at what someone will latch onto if you put enough thought into a mix for them. Be careful though, I found that a lot of those songs can become mutual faves which turn into a sore spot post-breakup.

Music is a great ground to get to know someone and talk to them and eventually hook up. It can be inhibitive when you have different tastes as a lot of girls I know are into the popular/charted music and have been critical on my indie tastes and obviously that doesn't bode well from the start. However if you are in your own relationship it shouldn't be a big sacrifice. There's got to SOME music you have common ground with and just work with what you have.
