They appear to be different people. At least they registered from different computers with different email addresses and have different birthdays.

I acknowledge that WL/WH can be tough sometimes. I can do without "The Gift", and "Sister Ray" is 17 minutes long. However, there are few songs in the history of music I would want to hear live more than "Sister Ray".

All of their studio albums are highly acclaimed.

At different points in my life each of the first four albums has been my "favorite" VU album. When I first discovered the Velvet Underground (late 80s, just after REM put out Dead Letter Office), I was smitten with VU&N. Later when I was at the height of my Sonic Youth phase (early 90s), WL/WH was my favorite. Still later when I discovered that Lou Reed was one hell of a pop song writer it was Loaded that was at the top of the pile. Now in my older, wiser years I've settled on The Velvet Underground as my fave-- it might be the calming effect it has on me.

Indeed. If The VU and Nico gets any more acclaim, it's because it was first. But I've seen just as many lists over the years with WL/WH, The Velvet Underground, and Loaded on them. The only VU album that doesn't get any attention is the now out-of-print album they made after Lou Reed quit the band (I think it was basically Doug Yule and some yahoos).

Personally, I like their third, self-titled album the best.

Not from internet music fans! Instead they say things like "Velvet Underground & Nico isn't that good!" Like people in this topic have been doing... see? Wink

When forced to choose, I generally go with this one as well.

Sorry if we actually listen to the records and make up our own minds. I didn't think that was frowned upon around here Smiler

I love Velvet Underground & Nico too! Though I wouldn't go as far as to say that White Light/White Heat is overrated trash, I do feel that VU & Nico is a stronger album.

She makes the music fun, in addition to all that other shit it is.

yeah! It makes me sad how many people try to kick Nico out and discredit her role in all that. Of course it was all Warhol's idea, but honestly I think Reed and Cale were both giant assholes (bigger assholes than musical Gs ), especially around that time. So I'm happy somebody else is in on it.

I also think it's interesting how you can throw an 8 minute, two chord song about heroin with viola shrieking the whole time on an album (among other sandpaper smooth freakouts), but the thing that bugs people is this woman's bizarre voice.

And while her voice did get to me at first, I'm comfortable with it now. Nico's delivery is really stiff on VU & Nico. But I think mebbe listening to her solo albums got me used to her voice. It's amazing and uncanny. I've heard nothing else like it, really.

Not really. I actually like her solo work. I just don't like her versions of the VU songs on the first record.

Big Grin As a Queenslander, you should be used to that.

Getting back to the VU, "The Gift" is fantastic. You've got Cale's mellifluous tones coming out of one channel, and the band going crazy out of the other. One of that album's highlights.

Hard to choose between WLWH and VU as their best.

On the topic of old people fucking, the elderly are the largest growing population with sexually transmitted diseases. So this is a message to all you promiscuous old farts:

"Sex isn't wrong, but you gotta be right
If you're hitting the sheets, then wrap it up tight"

Cool

Oops. Is that the track I said I could live without? Oops.

Well, it's 8+ minutes and spoken word. That's a recipe for interesting at first but not quite as rewarding on repeated listens. Just my opinion. I am a big fan of the album as a whole though. It's hard to imagine what listening to that would've been like in 1968.

I first heard it in 1970. Quite a shock after TVUAN. I'm with you to some extent re spoken word, but Cale's voice...

I'd love to hear him recite Under Milk Wood
