You're on fire, mate, and I want to say well done. I think you've navigated your position with reasonable aplomb and I can sort of see your point. I sometimes feel there's this (often wearisome) obligation thrust upon modern music lovers to revisit the classics. Maybe we should revisit history (so we don't repeat the past), but I'm not 100% we need to turn this revisioning into a guilt-laden burden on contemporary music lovers.
All you need to do now, Hudson, is call Shakespeare's work into question, raise an eyebrow over Kubrick's career, and perhaps question Einstein's contribution to science, and I reckon you'll have pretty much called the whole establishment to account.
We need people like you on these forums to just throw some caution to the wind and query the canon.
For what it's worth, I think the canon will contain the Beatles for a long time - and that's alright. But I hope I have the pleasure of one day telling my kids that their dad was into Arcade Fire, Radiohead or Okkervil River the first time round.

But isn't that kind of like watching the movie when you should be reading the book? Duly noted mark, and it's an easy assignment. I love movies.
In addition to Mark's suggestion, you should read a book. I suggest SHOUT! The Beatles in Their Generation by Philip Norman.

Music for the geritol set. I'm proud of the fact that my son and daughter are growing up with Neutral Milk Hotel, Radiohead, the Decemberists, Deerhoof, Animal Collective.
Although, my poor daughter came up to me the other day and said, "Daddy, I'm afraid you're going to be mad at me." When I asked her, "Why," she answered, "Because I think I like Hannah Montana!"
*Sigh* A parent can only do so much.

I don't have children yet, but one of things I'm looking forward to is sharing all my music with my son or daughter. That includes all of the bands you mentioned (sans Animal Collective) plus the Byrds, Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Can, Springsteen, Sex Pistols, Clash, Gang of Four, REM, Smiths, Replacements, Pixies, Nirvana, Teenage Fanclub, Radiohead, Guided by Voices, Yo la Tengo-- just to name a few in loose chronological order

"The Beatles were a boy band. That's why people went crazy over them. Yeah, sure they played their own instuments, but not that well. And the only decent songs they wrote were when they were on acid."-hudson

If you've never heard Bill Hicks on Billy Ray Cyrus (father to the girl from Hanna Montana) know it was nasty enough to get my comment deleted from her Youtube account.
When people hear The Beatles they pick up an instrument and play. Either by voice, guitar or whatever. And to relate them to a boy band is absurd. People aren't listening to the Backstreet Boys and N'Sync and suddenly forming bands. I just don't see how something so influential can also be a turn off to "older" music.

It took me four years to get into the Velv. Seriously. I finally realized that The Velvet Underground & Nico is overrated and White Light/ White Heat is where it's really at.

Did you start listening to them when you were five?
Haha, nope. I was in 8th grade.. so, uhh.. 13?
I was really into punk and found this book about it's history, saw that the Velvet Underground was mentioned as a big player in the creation of punk, then started dl'ing their music. It obviously wasn't what I was expecting at all. But over time I started to like them a lot; they're still not one of my favorites but I'm a big fan of Lou Reed (specifically "Perfect Day" and his other solo stuff, though)

I seriously would love that first record a lot more if they had stayed the hell away from Nico-- or at least not let her sing, she could of just danced on stage or something.
Bob, I think you're right. That quote has Ish all over it.

Love Velvet Underground & Nico, think White Light/White Heat is overrated trash.
Personal opinion, of course.
------ Aren't there any girls out their who like good music? I need to and want to meet them. My favorite bands are Overkill River, The Nife, Songs:Ohio, and Nuetral Milk Hotel. Please let me know if your into indy music and like to go to show's and drink beer's and makeout.
Aw, I like Nico on the first one! Actually, I do kind of hate her. But she's a strange kind of comic relief. Take "All Tomorrow's Parties" where she sings so commandingly, it's like she's oblivious to how funny she sounds. Like a giant Amazon. She makes the music fun, in addition to all that other shit it is.

I acknowledge that WL/WH can be tough sometimes. I can do without "The Gift", and "Sister Ray" is 17 minutes long. However, there are few songs in the history of music I would want to hear live more than "Sister Ray".
