Know-It-All

i know this could be in any thread but i picked this because this is pretty much the only genre i listen to anymore...

anyways for about a year or two i have been debating on buying a turntable or record player whatever they call them now-a-days, lol, but know nothing about it.

the reason being i want top-notch sound quality. i went to a friends brothers house and he had pretty much all the music we listen to in here, old and new on vinyl and quite frankly it sounded as if i was sitting in the studio with the band.

this comes to my question. with my record player, what do i need to look for? how much do i need to spend?

do i need a reciever?

and can you recommend in speakers to look at to go along with this system?

again i know this isnt talking about indie music so i apologize if i wasted any of your time reading this. :/

ps... yes i did buy the 82 dollar discbox Wink

you need a tuner or receiver, speakers, premium speaker wire and the best cartridge and stylus you can afford. Make sure that the tuner has plenty of power to push your speakers because some speakers that sound great are have high resistance (lots of ohms}. Probably 80 watts will be okay to push two speakers. The most important purchases are the speakers and the cartridge and stylus. 25+ years ago I invested in a Grado stylus (I forget what cartridge I had but I think it was the stock one on my Phillips turntable) and Rogers studio monitors. The Grado was over a 100 bucks and the speakers were just over 600 dollars. The sound was remarkable. My ex-wife has the speakers and they are still fine. I broke the Grado and hope to get the systems set up again.

more: get the best connecting wire (connections between components) you can find as well. Speaker placement is important. For instance placing the speakers in a corner enhances the bass enuf to notice. Another arrangement is to buy a decent receiver (you might want to listen to F-M radio) and run it through a good power amplifier. The speakers would connect to the power amplifier.
You can buy turntable with cartridge and stylus all as a unit. You can buy a turntable, buy a cartridge, and then by a suitable stylus.
I sounds complicated perhaps, but you will figure it out. Oh, you will run your CD player thru the power amp as well. If you buy a headset I recommend the Sennheisers that cost about a 100 bucks.

You could get cheap connectors, cheap speaker wire and such, but the subtle differences these items make add up to fine listening. The turntable itself is the least important part of the deal.
Have lots of fun. Smiler

I love my Denon turntable, bought it about 7 years ago. Even the bottom of the price line Denons are excellent. Plus I have a Denon reciever and cassette player.

Avoid the crap that Best Buy and super-electronic outlets try to dump on people. Unless they will order you something decent.

I'd figure out how much you want to spend and then search the electronics' buyer guides on the net.
