I went through a long phase of listening to songs where the singer really meant it. I think my favourite is 'Common people' by Pulp. Jarvis Cocker turns basic social commentary into a massive anthem - a big 2 fingers to the psuedo middle classes and fake people everywhere. He's incredible on that song.

Yeah I'd definitely agree with the inclusion of Marquee Moon, but also Little Johnny Jewel (both Television) - the moment of release on both when the duelling guitars finish is incredible.
I'd also give shouts to... -Dead Souls by Joy Division (and not NIN silly, synthetic cover version) -I Want You by Elvis Costello -Disintegration by The Cure
and, finally, the least intense song ever... the quite hilarious cover of Let Down (Radiohead) by Toots and The Maytals. Nothing against Toots who is a legend but never have I heard a less appropriate rendering of such an intense song...

You've obviously never heard 'Wild Thing' by Senator Everett McKinley then. Maybe we should start a new thread for least intense song...
