When I think intense, I seem to remember Bright Eyes' Letting Off the Happiness, especially the first two cuts--If Winter Ends and Padraic My Prince

I am thinking of "Instant Karma" by The Plastic Ono Band. Something so raw and out there about that song really gets to me.

Many other Beatles choices, but those jumped out first.
Their cover of "Money" - Lennon (I think) was totally committed to the lyrics and the band was totally committed to the song.

Really, any track off of Liars Drum's Not Dead. I think that, with their trademark tension and release, The Walkmen have some really intense songs, "The Rat" comes to mind.

I can't believe this hasn't been said yet but Television's "Marquee Moon" is a ten-minute epic battle of intensity (well at least in my opinion).

I mean intense, like the singer really meant what he was singing. Basically, you could tell the lyrics were important to the singer. Here's a few that I thought of to start this off:
1. 2 headed boy- Neutral Milk Hotel (Jeff Magnum's intensity is hard to match).
2. Black-Okkervil River (Could have just as easily included For Real).
Short List, but hopefully this will start some debate.
Excellent, excellent choices. I'd add: The National - "Mr November" Onelinedrawing - "We Had A Deal"

"Two-Headed Boy" and "Black" were the first two songs I thought of; "Mr. Novmber" is a really good one, too. Plus: "I Can't Get Next to You" by Thee More Shallows "Cosmonaut" by At the Drive-In "Good Morning, Captain" by Slint "The Glow pt. 2" by The Microphones "Samaurai Sword" by The Microphones "Caravan Breakers" by Frog Eyes "Nomadic Revery(All Around)" by Bonnie "Prince" Billy "Forest Gospel" by Animal Collective "How Near How Far" by Trail of Dead 3/4 of The Mountain Goats catalog

That is so cool!

"When I Was In _______" - Juno This song is actually in the musical dictionary under "intense". No, really, I just looked it up.

Great picks, joji. Almost anything from Source Tags & Codes is pretty intense. That whole album just has this strange sense of urgency. I'll add a few more: "That Crown Don't Make you A Prince" - Murder by Death "St. Rosa And the Swallows" - The Thermals "Our Trip" - The Thermals "Obstacle 1" - Interpol "The Trial" - Pink Floyd

The ones by Brite Eyes were great calls.
Positively 4th Street by Bob Dylan. You can feel his disgust for the person/people he is talking about.

"Ticks and Leeches" - Tool
I don't know if the singer cares about the lyrics, but apparently it strains his voice so much they either never perform it live or he needs to use some sort of voice effects to perform it.
There's gotta be at least a couple of intense Rammstein songs. maybe "Klavier" or "Feuer Frei!" If only i could understand the lyrics it would be easier to determine.
