This thread is to make statements that most on Metacritic or in the music industry would find sacrilegious. I know we have overrated threads and such, but here you can compare artists, albums, anything you want. I'll start:

1. I don't think Kid A is in the same ballpark as OK Computer .
2. I think The Rolling Stones are the most overrated band of all time.

I'll have more later but I'll start with these 2.

Paul Simon's Graceland did more to sour me on world music than the campy Ewok music in Return of the Jedi.

I'm not intentionally trying to rile people up, but:
The two most overrated bands that Metacritic users love are The Hold Steady and Liars.

I just posted my top 5 overrated bands still working today over in the "top 5" post - I suppose I can come up with the "Top 5" overrated of all time for this new post.

In no particular order:
Nirvana (one great album, couple of decent ones - but Best Alternative Group Ever? Nah)
The Beatles (seriously - has anyone heard the first half of their career? EVERYONE WAS MAKING THAT KIND OF MUSIC!)
Radiohead's Bends/OK Computer-era (great albums both, but of all time as every British music magazine claims? Not even close)
Bright Eyes ("new Dylan?" Perhaps if Dylan didn't make any of the best music and lyrics of any era ever. Then I could see it)
The Doors ('Nuff said)

These are my serious choices/opinions. Though I know these will ruffle feathers, it's not my intention.

The whole early-Beatles-are-over-rated haS been milked to death around these parts. So I doubt you're ruffling too many feathers. I would suggest you go back and listen to popular radio, pre-1964 in the U.S. and then post-1964. Maybe everyone was doing it, but there's one gigantic reason they were, and it's called THE BEATLES.

I agree with you on Nirvana. Nevermind was great, In Utero was O.K./Good. They are overrated.

I disagree with the Beatles though. Maybe everyone was making THAT KIND OF MUSIC, but they were making it better than anyone else. Songs like Ticket to Ride, She Loves You, Eight Days a Week, Anna go to him, etc. were great pop music. They may have been one of many, but they still did it the best.

I get frustrated when people swear off the Beatles early work, I think it's some pretty good stuff.

Whew, that's a pretty rough statement. I love most stuff from The Rolling Stones all of the way through Exile. But to each their own, as they say.

It's not that I don't like the Stones, I do. It's just that people often say The Beatles or The Stones, as if they are the only 2 choices. I think Zeppelin, Floyd, and The Who are all better than the Stones. The Stones seem to kind of be annointed the 2nd best band of all time, and I just don't see it. Again, I think they are pretty good, but since they are considered by many to be the 1st or 2nd best band ever, I do think they are extremely overrated.

1. I think that Metacritic sucks as a way to rank albums, seeing as the popular albums have 30+ reviews thrown in there, whereas the less popular ones only have 10 or so.

"Boxer" by the National is a boring Tindersticks rip-off.

I agree with this, actually. Part of it, though, might be the fact that OK Computer was one of the albums that first got me interested in listening to music more seriously. I think I actually listened to Kid A first, but the only songs I really liked after listening to it a few times were "Optimistic" and "Idioteque", whereas I generally found the songs on OK Computer enjoyable after my first couple listens. Naturally, the one that I continued to listen to more at that time was OK Computer, so it's probably at least partially my emotional attachment to it that causes me to like it more.

I did go back and listen to Kid A, though. I promise.Big Grin

Ranking year-end lists is ridiculous. I defy anyone to make a cogent argument why their 14th album is better than their 19th.

You're right. I bought Kid A on vinyl, the highest possible compliment, and I threw OK Computer in the bin.

I like it more. Well, at the very least, the last time I listened to each, I liked the 14th more than the 19th. Was that cogent? Razzer

And I'm on the OK Computer >> Kid A side too.

There is nothing that Animal Collective can do to make their music anywhere near good.

Noah Lennox can keep on doing his own thing though, that's pretty cool.

edit: basically Avey Tare can just stop making music and the world would be better for it

Even though I made a list, I completely agree with this, there is no way a person can have enough time to digest all these albums, and if you do have that much time then get a job hippie.
