Nothing beats the scope, originality, creativity, character, cohesive theme, magical harmony, mystery, revelation, repeated satisfaction, solid musicianship, accomplishment, childish innocense, pure emotional depth, and groundbreaking, headturning, awesomeness, of Illinois. And seriously, you already knew from those descriptions what album I was talking about. There is nothing else on even this highly respectable list of great music that can compete with it in my mind. Music is personal though, and I'll let you have your favorites if you wish. But for me, Sufjan created something with Illinois that goes forever further than the artform of the music album should be able to go.

I'm not quite as effusive about it as Shadrach but my vote went to Illinois as well. I may bitch about Sufjan not releasing a followup, but maybe it's because he knows he can't top Illinois.
------ Aren't there any girls out their who like good music? I need to and want to meet them. My favorite bands are Overkill River, The Nife, Songs:Ohio, and Nuetral Milk Hotel. Please let me know if your into indy music and like to go to show's and drink beer's and makeout.
Hmm...As I mentioned somewhere else, 2005 is where the decade starts going downhill for me. My favorites aren't on the list, and would include I Am A Bird Now by Antony and The Body, the Blood, the Machine by The Thermals.
But sticking with the spirit of the thread, I'd pick Wolf Parade first and she-who-will-not-be-named a distant last.
Actually I probably like Illinois better, but I went with Z because it makes better background music--I don't get distracted listening to the words for 70 minutes if I have it on while I'm trying to do something.

He'll probably release something later this year. But it will probably be a lot like In Rainbows, to where we won't know about it until 10 days before it comes out. Doesn't give it enough time to leak. Plus, you've got to give him a break. He's running a record label.
Illinois-Sufjan Stevens Apologies to the Queen Mary-Wolf Parade The Woods-Sleater-Kinney Z-My Morning Jacket The Crane Wife-The Decemberists Boys and Girls in America-The Hold Steady Y's-Joanna Newsom Return to Cookie Mountain-TV on the Radio In Rainbows-Radiohead Boxer-The National Hissing Fauna, are you the Destroyer-Of Montreal Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga-Spoon
None of the above are even close for me. I'd pick Until We Are Missing by Gentleman Caller, Keren Ann's s/t, The White Stripes' Get Behind Me Satan and the Surf Coasters Samurai Struck. Plus a special mention to the life-changing reissues from Selda Bagcan, Turkish psychedelic folk goddess of yore.
Oh, could I feel as I have felt, or be what I have been, Or weep as I could once have wept, o'er many a vanished scene; As springs in deserts found seem sweet, all brackish though they be, So, midst the withered waste of life, those tears would flow to me.
