I'm new to Metacritc so excuse me for all the posts, but it is fun to learn new music.
For this list I'm hoping people will make a top 5 list of GREAT songs by artists that aren't known by everyone. No Interpool or Ryan Adams on this list. All right, here goes:
1. "Choice Blanket"-Sea and Cake (new to me, even though 90's) 2. "Bye Bye Pride"-Go Betweens (don't think they are that well know in the States). 3. "Sue's Last Ride"-The Dirty Three (great instrumental band). 4. "The Dugout"-Ladyhawk (new indie band I just heard about). 5. "Chelsea Dagger"-The Fratelli's (my new favorite song to drink too).
Yeah, it's funny. I'd have a tough time coming up with music that people on this site don't know....but I will go the (somewhat) less popular route:
Hands - Four Tet (brilliant acoustic-electro song off my favorite electronic album) Did I Step on Your Trumpet? - Danielson (hated at first, slowly turning into my pop track of the year) Great News Around You - Minus 5 (sounds like a mix between Beach Boys style pop and a rough-around-the-edges Wilco) Shut Up I am Dreaming of Places Where Lovers Have Wings - Sunset Rubdown (beautiful song off an amazing album. Don't judge until you listen all the way through...it goes in unexpected directions. Better than Wolf Parade IMHO) All Night Radio - All Night Radio (just a great end of night type song. If your nights end like mine do...it's a treat)
"In The Future" - Tub Ring : Experimental rock - Crazy Mr. Bungle type song "Nights Like These" - Lucero : Punk/Southern Rock - Great balled from this band "Virginia, Don't Drown" - Chinup Chinup : Indie Rock - Best song they've written "Candlegoat" - Sunn 0))) : Drone Metal - The rattling blows my mind "A Sweet Summer's Night On Hammer Hill" - Jens Leckmen :Indie Pop - Great song. It's got some great lyrics.
1. DJ Shadow- Building Steam With A Grain of Salt: Possibly the greatest hip-hop/Electronica song ever (Even though I don't think much would qualify for that category). 2. Comets on Fire- Sour Smoke: This song is literally on fire... Burning your soul (Groovy Track) 3. The Minutemen- Cohesion: A short instrumental off of one of the greatest punk albums of all time. 4. Nellie Mckay- Gladd: Beautiful and solemn music... 5. New Order- Ceremony: One of the greatest songs of all time even though I prefer Joy Division!

Yes! That song has always been a favorite of mine. I love that creepy vibe.

Another great electronica track. That album is essential. "Hands" isn't my favorite track off that album, but it's really good.

Elephant Micah's got dozens and dozens of great songs. He does a sort of Neil Young Americana stlye usually. He's got a fabulous voice. One of my top 3 active artists right now, and one of the most prolific as well. Can't praise this guy highly enough. This song is from his best album, And the Agrarian Malaise, which came out last year.

I'll take it as a compliment Pulque. Just fun to hear of music I may not have heard, and thought this was a good way to learn new songs. Already learned some good ones from this list that I haven't heard before. Let me add a couple of more (first one is an Aussie, Pulque).
"Wish you well"-Bernard Fanning "Wrecking Force"-Voxtrot "Cherry Blossom Color Season"-Katamari Damacy (Heard of this somewhere on this site. I have since learned it is from a Japanese Video Game, but it doesn't matter. Great music).

Best..., Bernard Fanning I've heard of but not heard. The other two, no. I'd like a dollar for every artist mentioned on this site that I've never heard of ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ )
Great topic! I'm also new here, and I kind of expected to find more interested obscure music than I have so far. Here goes:
Tea Time Ska-- Tsu Shi Ma Mi Re (awesome Japanese girl band that has opened for Suicide Girls Burlesque the last couple years) You're So Fine-- The Aquatones (incredibly catchy, happy song of old) Chauffeur-- The Fitness (not so obscure, but also great catchy pop) I'll Meet You in Poland, Baby-- Foetus (strangely flippant Hitler song) Wraith Pinned To The Mist And Other Games-- Of Montreal (I have no idea if this is obscure or not, I got it from a promotional sampler)
So, that's pretty much all pretty poppy stuff. But there is so little good pop that gets exposure, I thought it would be good to pass on.
Sadly, my tastes tend towards the norm, so I don't really have any songs to share. However, I will second Whitelight's suggestion of Wraith Pinned to the Mist And Other Games. Very, very catchy fun song.
------ Aren't there any girls out their who like good music? I need to and want to meet them. My favorite bands are Overkill River, The Nife, Songs:Ohio, and Nuetral Milk Hotel. Please let me know if your into indy music and like to go to show's and drink beer's and makeout.
Originally posted by ericg75: 1. "Prettiest Whore" - East River Pipe. Mark and pE probably know this one, but I'm not sure about everyone else.
"...frantic flaming San Francisco queen." Or something like that. I think that's off Mel, right? I never checked out What Are You On?. Is it good?
Not to answer for ericg75, but "Prettiest Whore" is on Mel. I thought What Are You On? was a little lackluster for F.M. Cornog, but still good.
Five songs I want others to know:
1. "Dignity" Deacon Blue 2. "Why Won't You Stay?" American Music Club 3. "Grudgefuck" Scud Mountain Boys 4. "Killer Parties" The Hold Steady 5. "History Chimes" Echo and the Bunnymen
All five of mine are from one artist-Brian Vander Ark, former frontman from the Verve Pipe, who has put out two albums as a solo artist. His release this year Angel, Put Your Face On, is my number one album this year:
1. Belong 2. The Heart that Keeps You 3. 1229 Sheffield 4. And Then You Went Away 5. Another Good Man
You can listen to his songs for free at his website. I would put a link up, but I don't want to be viewed as being a "street teamer" so if you want to hear him, a simple google search will suffice.

What are some other of their great songs?
Heaps, really. I've always been partial to "Jesus and Tequila" and "A Political Song For Michael Jackson To Sing", both from Double Nickles on the Dime.
The album What Makes a Man Start Fires is also very good. Have fun

Of course there's the classic "Corona", known to most people under 25 as the theme song from "Jackass".
It's tough to recommend single songs though, you really need to pick up Double Nickels on the Dime in it's entirety. To call it a punk album is somewhat of a misnomer. While punks at heart, the Minutemen fused punk, funk, jazz, rock, and just about anything else you could think of. At a whopping 43(!) tracks, it never gets dull.
