I've always wondered if such a list could be compiled. I think not, but we could have a pretty good go at championing those little wonders which make our lives so much better.
If anything, the musicians and bands who travel the world and regularly visit radio stations would have the best idea. There has to be a few musos on this forum with an opinion.......
My personal favourite, and have little reservation in calling it the worlds greatest radio station is Melbournes own 3RRR.
This station is completely independent, with most of its revenue coming from subscribers all over the world, but mostly from Melbourne town. It plays anything the DJ feels like, but has programs throughout the week which covers pretty much the entire music spectrum, minus classical. Almost every band/artist on this site is played for instance, and that is only scratching the surface.
I have been a passionate listener and subscriber to 3 RRR for 6 years now, and when ever I leave town, or the country, it is painfully obvious that we are unique in Melbourne, with a station that promotes all forms of art from the city and the world over. I feel it is one of the very reasons our live scene is so renowned.
I feel sorry for those who have to put up with clear channel and the like, and hope we can uncover a list of great stations which cater to the needs of the music/culture lover. Its something we could all latch onto, or reference whenever travelling.
My favorite radio station is KCSU at Colorado State U. in Ft. Collins, CO. It plays a wide range of independent artists without commercials! Check them out at http://www.csufm.com
In my opinion, the BEST radio station right now is Indie 103.1 in Los Angeles, CA (but it can be played online in any city). Some of the DJs with regular shows are Steve Jones (Sex Pistols), Rob Zombie (White Zombie), Dicky Barrett (Bosstones), Henry Rollins, Dave Nararro, Nina Blackwood, and my favorite THE CRYSTAL METHOD (this is just a small selection of the types of hosts featured on this station.)
Back in the day (early 90s), it was WEQX out of Manchester, Vermont. Late 90s, I'd say WBER out of Rochester, NY. And the early 2000s, it was WOXY out of Cincinnati (They're still really good and still online).
I wouldn't call Santa Monica College's KCRW the best radio station, since it's mostly just an NPR station, but it has the best morning rock show, Morning Becomes Eclectic w/ Nic Harcourt. It's syndicated on most NPR stations if anybody wants to listen to it. The website has all their guest appearnaces archived, and they get some of the best bands so check it out.
Hello, no one listens to radio anymore?! Well, when I'm not talking to my physical friends who recommend Disturbed and Slipknot and I'm not reading the forums, I use the radio to find new music. So.... I recommend:
WFMU - Pretty much the greatest radio station ever. There's a variety of comedy programs along with various DJs who've included Jeff Mangum (no longer), Tom Scharpling, and Glen Jones. Anyway, Ted Leo is a huge fan of The Best Show on WFMU and frequently calls in. Check it out. No commercials, DJ's have complete control, and you will definitely hear music you never knew existed
The former plays indie music generally but also has great shows like Jonesy's Jukebox where Steve Jones (yes, of Sex Pistols) basically does whatever he wants for 2 hours. 101.9 is a New York station playing alternative and classic rock. They play some indie like Arcade Fire and MGMT but rarely. Both stations have commercials but still play great music

BBC 6. Plays anything and everything with minimally annoying D.J's
Oh, could I feel as I have felt, or be what I have been, Or weep as I could once have wept, o'er many a vanished scene; As springs in deserts found seem sweet, all brackish though they be, So, midst the withered waste of life, those tears would flow to me.
A good mix of more popular indie/alternative (Spoon, Bloc Party, Radiohead) bands with some good older stuff. They play a little too much emo metal though (Seether, Evanescence).
