It was announced today that the group Dogs Die In Hot Cars broke up a few months ago. I wouldn't say I'm a fan of the group, but it was interesting to realize that if I hadn't just happened apon the news this afternoon the group would have probably just vanished from existence in my mind.

So it got me thinking of other groups that have just disapeared. I mean, I don't even think Pavement officially broke up. Bands just sortof drift apart.

I was a big fan of the group Knapsack several years ago before the group disolved, and the lead singer went on to start a band called The Jealous Sound, and they actually did fairly well. Information about them surfaces every year or so, but no progress towards anything new.

Any other groups that you were really into that just disapeared randomly? And if this is already a topic somewhere, you can just direct me to it and I won't be offended.

There was this band out of San Francisco called The Stratford 4 that released an album back in '02 called Love and Distortion that I liked. One of their songs came on in a random shuffle on my ipod and I thought, why hasn't this band released another album? Turns out they broke up.

Whatever happened to a little, unknown band called My Bloody Valentine? They just sort of disappeared 15 years or so ago.

Most of people will say it's a good thing they broke up. A certain reviewer (who likes the band) said in his review of the last GYBE record that the band should stop making records. I can't understand that. Why should we think that a great post-rock band should break up? That's ridiculous. Well.....

Fugazi didn't formally "break up" but it's going on six years without so much as a whisper of reforming. However, they didn't exactly disappear, as I'm sure fans of the band have noticed given their relative popularity from the 90s. Fugazi is (was) one of my favorite bands, but I'm not sure I'd want to see them re-unite to release new material. I should follow up on the various members side projects.

I'll add Remy Zero to the list. I got really into them about a year before they release 'The Golden Hum'. They released one amazing album on a major label and then disapeared forever.

If you haven't heard 'The Golden Hum' you should check out a few tracks. Namely "Glorious". May they rest in peace.

They're living on forever as the writers of the theme song to Smallville.

Unwound. One of my all time favorite groups. They built their own studio and then used it to make one final album, Leaves Turn Inside You. I never heard that they actually broke up or anything but like Fugazi they haven't made an album since 2001 and I'm pretty sure they aren't going to anytime soon if ever.

Pitchfork just reminded me this morning that Aphex Twin needs to be added to this list. I know he always opperated in a half vanished form to begin with, but he really just disapeared.

Really, you could probably argue that the entire Techno Genre (as it existed in the 90s) has vanished.

Man Or Astroman. Haven't heard anything from them since '01 when they released a limited edition album.

crazed: they played at the touch and go 25th/hideout 10th block party last year with big black and others...

same concert/different band: Supersystem (formally El Guapo) don't know if they played another show after that, a singer from OutHud played on Supersystem's albums and now OutHud is gone as well.

Glad to hear MOAM is still at it. Wish they'd record & release something soon.
