The Decade is only half over...but if someone pressed you for a top ten right now...what titles would be locks for you, and which would receive heavy consideration...
Here's my choices...
My Locks would include The Woods - Sleater Kinney Elephant - The White Stripes Kid A - Radiohead A Grand Don't Come for Free - Streets American Idiot - Green Day Lateralus - Tool
Heavy Consideration would go to...
Bubblegum - Mark Lanegan Yankee Hotel Foxtrot - Wilco Funeral - Arcade Fire Franz Ferdinand Speakerbox/The Love Below - Outcast Sea Change - Beck Rush of Blood to the Head - Coldplay and for a camp entry God Says No - Monster Magnet
(I posted this in part because I want to catch up on 2000-2004 albums, so come on people, chime in)

Shouldn't a top ten list actually include ten bands?
He said 'Locks'. If there were ten locks, he'd have no reason to listen to anything that came out in the next four years.
My current favorites for the 00's would be..
Radiohead - Kid A Primal Scream - XTRMNTR White Stripes - White Blood Cells Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot Flaming Lips - Yoshime Battles The Pink Robots White Stripes - Elephant Loretta Lynn - Van Lear Rose Sleater-Kinney - The Woods Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
Obviously, not all of those are 'locks', as there are nine of them and four years left. If any of them are locks... Radiohead, Wilco, Loretta Lynn, and Elephant.
To say something is a lock is to say that it absolutely cannot and will not change. This is an assumption and although it is highly unlikely, the next four years could bring such amazing music that all 10 of my choices change. For now, I will go with my top ten to date. (Subject to change)
My Morning Jacket - Z The Tea Party - Tangents The Tea Party - The Interzone Mantras Dishwalla - Opaline The Arcade Fire - Funeral Sigur Rós - ( ) P-Bo - Reflections of an Underachieving Alcoholic but Generally Kind and Forgiving Person A Silver Mt. Zion - He Has Left Us Alone But Shafts Of Light Sometimes Grace The Corner Of Our Rooms The White Stripes - Elephant Iron and wine - Our Endless Numbered Days

1. Modest Mouse - The Moon and Antarctica 2. Radiohead - Kid A 3. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot 4. Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights 5. Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake it's Morning 6. The Shins - Oh! Inverted World 7. The White Stripes - White Blood Cells / Elephant (tie) 8. Spoon - Gimme Fiction / Kill the Moonlight (tie) 9. Cat Power - You Are Free 10. Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker
I took the liberty of having some ties where I thought artists had released two equally great albums.
Some honorable mentions I didn't include are: Idlewild - 100 Broken Windows, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, The Wrens - Meadowlands, Dangermouse - The Grey Album, Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary, and MIA - Arular
And, as Bob said, with four years to go, anything could change.
----- We were wasps with new wings, now we're bugs in the jar.
Here are my top ten of the oughts that I could come up with at work. If we're all still doing this in four years, I'm sure it will look a bit different. In no particular order(except #1)...
1. Franz Ferdinand - S/T 2. The Streets - A Grand Don't Come for Free 3. Bjork - Vespertine 4. Outkast - Stankonia 5. The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots 6. Four Tet - Rounds 7. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Abbatoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus 8. Madvillain - Madvillainy 9. LCD Soundsystem - S/T 10. Hood - Cold House
I'll cut the french artists from Quebec because you surely don't know and don't want to know about them. In desorder:
- Radiohead - Kid A - Wilco - A ghost is born - Radiohead - Hail to the thief - Coldplay - A rush of blood to the head - Mickey 3D - Tu ne va pas mourir de rire - The Les Claypool frog brigade - Purple onion - AFI - Sing the sorrow - Sonic Youth - Sonic Nurse - Modest Mouse - Good News... - The White Stripes - White Blood cells
Most likely in the decade's top 10 so far, in order by artist as I recall them.
White Stripes: 1. De Stijl 2. White Blood Cells 3. Elephant 4. Get Behind Me Satan Black Keys: 5. The Big Come Up 6. Rubber Factory Ryan Adams: 7. Gold Iron & Wine: 8. Our Endless Numbered Days 9. Woman King Bevis Frond: 10. Hit Squad
These are my 10 favorites (not necessarily the best, since it seems pointless to guess what others think):
1. Agaetis Byrjun - Sigur Ros (debatable for this list since allmusic says 1999, though Pitchfork says 2000 and the back of my copy says 2001) 2. The Sophtware Slump - Grandaddy (2000) 3. Funeral - The Arcade Fire (2004) 4. Kid A - Radiohead (2000) 5. Takk - Sigur Ros (2005) Other contenders in no particular order: Elephant - The White Stripes (2003) Yankee Hotel Foxtrot - Wilco (2002) Leave Here a Stranger - Starflyer 59 (2001) Amnesiac - Radiohead (2001) The Last Broadcast - Doves (2002) Lost Souls - Doves (2000) A Rush of Blood to the Head - Coldplay (2002) Sumday - Grandaddy (2003) Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots - The Flaming Lips (2002)
Oh, and nothing is a lock. 2006-2009 could be the greatest era in music ever! You never know.
This list requires more thought than I have time to give it right now, but I'd certainly consider
Wilco: YHF Fountains of Wayne: Welcome Interstate Managers Richard Ashcroft: Alone With Everybody Beck: Sea Change American Music Club: Love Songs for Patriots Pernice Brothers: The World Won't End Lloyd Cole and the Negatives: S/T U2: All That You Can't Leave Behind Whiskeytown: Pneumonia The Jayhawks: Smile
After that, it requires some thought. I hesitate to put anything on from 2005, simply because there's no distance. But I'd consider the British Sea Power, Richard Hawley, and maybe the Pernice Brothers from 2005...
For the record, the same thread exists here if you want to see how people ranked things a year ago:
Well, you can't really call anything a lock; the next four years could be the greatest in musical history.
But I'm gonna say there are 4 locks from 2000-2004:
Notwist - Neon Golden Fiery Furnaces - Blueberry Boat Radiohead - Kid A Sufjan Stevens - Seven Swans
Another 4 from that era have a decent chance:
Grandaddy - Sophtware Slump Wrens - Meadowlands Sufjan Stevens - Michigan Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - The Tyranny of Distance
Outside shot:
Adem - Homesongs Modest Mouse - Moon and Antarctica Damien Jurado - Ghost of David Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts of the Great Highway (Am I the only one who thinks this album kicks the crap out of everything he did with Red House Painters?)
From 2005 I felt like 3 albums stood out above the rest, and they all have a shot at top 10 status:
Thee More Shallows - More Deep Cuts Sufjan Stevens - Illinois Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy
And I'll cast my vote for the White Stripes as the most overrated band on the Metacritic forums. Just ahead of Wolf Parade.

Does that mean "Broken Record", or you can't get it outta your device (head, if necessary)? I've got some opinions (like those at pE's link), but I expect to be a much-more grounded and mature individual when 2010 hits (if I make it that long), so I'm steppin' back from this one. BUT, I AM in NO WAY saying that this isn't one of our most-popular threads right now. Post away!!!
Anybody have any opinions about or memories of the late, great Wilson Pickett? If so, post here, please. Thanks.
"Naked Woman, Naked Man Where did you get that nice sun tan?"
Greatest hits records don't really count. That culls from Splendor Soils, Edges of Twighlight, Transmission, and Triptych.
Nice to see another fan of them though! They've been sinking on me a bit lately, but I still like Splendor Soils a whole lot. (And most of the stuff on Tangents).
Yeah...I was thinking of starting a TOp 10 for thus Decade. Nice Topic!!!!!!
Still listening to Thee More Shallows for the first time....should I include!?!?!?! Yes! Sounds like Yo La Tengo(vocal....and amazing)
10 easy picks:
