Inspired by the original Guess the Song thread (that has apparently been sucked into a metacritic forum blackhole), which was inspired by the Guess the Movie thread.

Rules: Post lyrics from a song and the next person names it and provides new lyrics to confound us.

We can tell when you use google, so no cheating. Then again, this thread seemed to have failed miserably last time around, so try to keep it reasonably recognizable.

Anyways:

We can see the stars
from where the birds make their homes
staring back at us
Indifferent but distanced perfectly
projected endlessly
it's so fucking beautiful.

Love this song, it's "Spectacular Views" by Rilo Kiley.

BOOM.

+1

Anyways...

Outside the streets are on fire in a real death waltz between what's flesh and what's fantasy. Man, the poets down here don't write nothing at all, they just stand back and let it all be.

Hell to the yeah! "Jungleland", Bruce Springsteen.

OK, here's the next one:

Be the princess in that stone tower,
Crying for that handsome butcher's plight,
And as some princess might,
She still calls him a knight.

That's Okkervil River's "A King and a Queen". Great song.

Here's one you will have to dig back a few years for. It's the opening line from the song, so I hope it's not too difficult.

All the time you were burning my letters you were only acting the part.
You think without me you'll get on much better, but you don't even know your own heart.
Come home Darling, come home quickly.
Come home Darling, all is forgiven, so come home quickly.

I knew the artist, and the album but couldn't for the life of me remember the name of the song, so I Googled it.

I don't want to cheat though, so mums' the word.

ah man. I killed it? I'll tell, if you all promise to go and listen to it.

I'll give you a hint. It's not by a man that called himself Hernando the Tiger, and the song isn't called "A Song about Hosea and his wife that worked at Denny's"

Hey, I know that one. That's Pedro the Lion's "Of Minor Prophets and their Prostitute Wives". Great song.

Here's the first line from a B-Side that rivals this well known band's regular album material.

you make me lose my buttons oh yeah you make me spit
I don't like my clothes anymore
we're spending time and money yeah you're colder than yourself
now we're moving now we're taking control.

For best effect, pretend it's being sung by an arrogant robot with an amazing bass backing, and you will be most of the way to the answer.

That would be Specialist by Interpol, which is a fantastic song.

I'm thinking this shouldn't be too hard for you folks:

I am not gonna lose you
We are gonna stay married
In this house like a Louisiana graveyard
Where nothing ever stays buried

That one is "Southwood Plantation Road" by The Hold Steady The Mountain Goats. (Hold Steady did a live cover of it that's just awesome)

I got it in the mail one morning
There was no return address
Just my name in gold leaf on the front
There was no time or location
There was really no info at all
No date no place no time no RSVP

That's "You Are Invited" by The Dismemberment Plan.

I think this one's pretty easy.

Can we control ourselves for once?
Keep our hands off each other,
Keep our minds on the sum
Of each other.

Ahh I got this one,
Testament To Youth In Verse by the New Pornographers

Let's try this
I just want to hold you, I don't want to hold you down
I hear what you're saying and you're spinning my head around, and I can't make it alone

I didn't think my song was too tough, i'll give a hint...
It's not complicated.. you might even say it's "simple"

Might I suggest a rule where if someone doesn't guess the song within X amount of days that we ove on to some other lyrics?

I agree. The new rule should be 3 days.

Thus, I'll start us on something new.

Me and Timory holdin' hands -
I was shakin' hers, ‘cause she said she was a fan,
There was an awkward pause, and something that should’ve began
Just passed us by.
But I watched her sing along with every word,
In the prettiest voice that I never heard,
And I still see her dancing, wearin' my shirt:
Right there.

Ted Leo/Pharmacists "Timorous Me"

We came down from the north
Blue hands and a torch
Red wine and food for free
A possibility

That would be "We Share Our Mother's Health" by The Knife.

So drunk in the August sun
And you're the kind of girl I like
Because you're empty
And I'm empty
And you can never quarantine the past.

Pavement - "Gold Soundz"

Jasmine, I saw you peeping
As I pushed my foot down to the floor
I was going round and round the hotel garage
Must have been touching close to 94

The best song off of Low, aka "Always Crashing The Same Car" by David Bowie.

It doesn't matter because I have no sex life
And all I want to do now is inject my ex wife
I've seen the movie and I know what happens
