True. Though the mods probably disagree with me, thread hijacking is always a good time.

Not getting involved in anything above but for RL, the Squirrel Nut Zippers have about three or four pretty solid albums out. They have a lot of members so I am not too sure on how big of a role Andrew Bird plays in it but their music isn't that bad. I think he would arrange some of the string parts and play violin on the albums, also some of the Zippers played on a couple of his CDs under his "Bowl of Fire." I know that you aren't particularly saying that you think they suck but that you heard they suck, but I just wanted to let you know that I have heard them and they aren't that bad.

Unlike eric, I would take Andrew Bird's solo work over their music any day but that is just me. Anyways, you should check them out, maybe you would like them.

Weren't the Squirrel Nut Zippers the band in Swingers? I always considered them just a novelty act that latched onto that awful mid-90's swing boom.

I remember that tune "Hell." In the afterlife...

ok, well, since I knew I couldn't cram Andy Bird into 10 songs (thanks, RL!), here's:

Andrew Bird's Best 10 Songs, Part 2:

"Why?"
"Armchairs"
"Master Fade"
"Too Long"
"Scythian Empires"
"Two Way Action"
"Weather Systems"
"Opposite Day"
"Dear Old Greenland"
"Case in Point"

"Naked Woman, Naked Man
Where did you get that nice sun tan?"

I believe you're thinking of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.

Squirrel Nut Zippers were an old-school jazz revival band, but unlike Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Cherry Poppin' Daddies, who basically stuck to the lounge/swing stuff, the Zippers were all over the map. The concept of an indie band that played early 20th century music was (and is) pretty cool.

Jonathan Richman

Back in Your Life (Back in your Life)
This Summer Feeling (Jonathan Sings!)
This Kind of Music (Jonathan Sings!)
Vincent Van Gogh (Rockin' & Romance vs.)
Lonely Little Thrift Store (I'm So Confused)
Just Look at Me (Surrender to Jonathan)
Let Her Go into the Darkness (You must ask the heart)
The Tag Game (Jonathan Sings. cd xtra track)
Morning of our Lives (Live)
Corner Store (It's Time)

any comments about Jonathan being inter-changeable, and any song is as good as another is absolute nonsense to anyone who listens closely. Smiler

Oh, could I feel as I have felt, or be what I have been,
Or weep as I could once have wept, o'er many a vanished scene;
As springs in deserts found seem sweet, all brackish though they be,
So, midst the withered waste of life, those tears would flow to me.

Hey Ralph, not a bad list, but I'm curious as to why you ignored Christmas Caravan. "Winter Weather" and "Indian Giver" are both excellent.

Two Richman songs sadly missing from this list:

"I was Dancing At The Lesbian Bar"
"Reno"

If you throw in his Modern Lovers stuff, you can't get more essential than "Roadrunner".

I tend to put seasonal music in a different category than my main collection. I agree with your suggestions - but I would not introduce anybody to SNZ with Christmas Caravan.
