How about Jeff Mangum's version of "I Love How You Love Me"? It's one of those old staple kind of songs that seems like you'd be familiar with it by default, but I actually think this is the only version I've heard. But I think his voice really lends to the fragility of the song and with the baby crying in the background, that definite live atmosphere. I think it's a really wonderful cover.

Has anyone heard Of Montreal's fantastic cover of "Tropical Iceland"? I daresay it's better than the original(s) from Gallowsbird's Bark and EP.

Only live! When they came by in February the EP version (the superior of the Fiery Furnaces versions) played over the sound system before Of Montreal came on, and then a few songs in they ripped through a live version that was in fact pretty snazzy. I think was before Kevin started whipping it out on stage though

I have mentioned this before but for a very different cover check out Iron Man by the Cardigans. In my opinion it's great, but it is certainly very different.

Sonic Youth covering "Psycho Mafia" by The Fall. It was on some Peel Session from 1988. Excellent, they make the original obsolete. Their cover of The Carpenters' "Superstar" is also great. Not as good but interesting in a "you should hear it at least once" way is the Sonic Youth cover of Nirvana b-side "Moist Vagina."

I'm going to have to throw in Bloodhound Gang - Along Comes Mary. I really don't like the rest of their music because of their childish lyrical rut. I think if they just did cover version of decent songs they would have a lot of musical talent and could do some damage.

David Bowie's 'Modern Love' by Last Town Chorus. Tori Amos also did some great covers on her live boxed set.
