I'm going to really have to organize my record collection (alphabetically) before you come, LT. I took a cursory look and couldn't find either my "Seconds of Pleasure" LP (with my blood on the cover...that's a story I'll save for you when you and hal get here) or my 45 of the Everly Bros. songs. I know they're in there, but I didn't want to spend too long looking now. More later...my daughter needs me.
"Naked Woman, Naked Man Where did you get that nice sun tan?"
Johnny Cash - "Hurt" (NIN) Marilyn Manson - "I Put A Spell On You" (Screamin' Jay Hawkins) Th' Legendary Shack*Shakers - "Help Me" (Sonny Boy Williamson) The Prodigy - "Fuel My Fire" (L7) Aretha Franklin - "Respect" (Otis Redding) - How is it that no one's put this one up yet? Error - "Homicide" (999) Nine Inch Nails - "Memorabilia" (Soft Cell) Nine Inch Nails - "Dead Souls" (Joy Division) Nine Inch Nails - "Metal" (Gary Numan) - Yes, I'm hopeless. Deadsy - "Brand New Love" (Sebadoh) Powerman 5000 - "Good Times Roll" (The Cars) The Flaming Lips - "Can't Get You Out of My Head" (Kylie Minogue)

All props to you, kwakerjak. I was shocked to click back to my list and find it absent. Like Hendrix's cover of "All Along The Watchtower," "Respect" is one of those rare instances where the cover transcends the original to become the definitive version. What's the quote attributed to Otis Redding? "That girl stole my song," I think.
Now Playing: "Wishing Well" Bob Mould Workbook streaming on Seattle's KEXP <-- now that's just such a darn fine track!
As I'm writing this, I'm being subjected to a cover version that did NOT need to be done.
I love Warren Zevon, and mourn his passing, but Adam Sandler is on Letterman butchering "Werewolves of London." I've got no beef with Sandler, but his music (including his holiday songs, which many people seem to love) is really annoying. This is NOT the way to honor Warren's memory. And, apparently, he's on the Zevon tribute record. Ugh.
Thanks to LT, I've been exposed to some cool covers from the album "V.O.T.E." by Chris Stamey & Yo La Tengo. They include covers of the Yardbirds' "Shapes of Things", Television's "Venus" and Cream's "Politician". I also like YLT's cover of the Beach Boys' "Little Honda" and the Feelies cover of the Stooges' "Real Cool Time". Later, Gators.

Their cover of "Imagine" is pretty cringe-worthy in my opinion. Awful industrial-metal schlock.
Also, I have that Scissor Sisters cover of "Comfortably Numb" on single. I'm not really familiar with the original song, and I didn't care for this version, but I might give it another spin.
I've always read in Portuguese, British and French music press that Bauhaus did the best covers ever (even surpassing the already excellent originals):
David Bowie's ZIGGY STARDUST T-Rex's TELEGRAM SAM Brian Eno's THIRD UNCLE (this one equals the original in my opinion)
Byrds - My Back Pages (Dylan) Voivod - The Nile Song (Pink Floyd) Cathedral - Solitude (Black Sabbath) Creedence Clearwater Revival - Cottonfields (Leadbelly) Chocolate Watchband - Come On (Chuck Berry) although it owes more to the Stones' version Blue Cheer - Summertime Blues (Eddie Cochran) The Animals - It's All Over Now, Baby Blue (Dylan) Chelsea - Many Rivers to Cross (Jimmy Cliff)

Yes they did on their reunion 1976 LP "Before we were so rudely interrupted". Has other great Ray Charles', Jimmy Cliff et al. songs too done in a smokey atmosphere. My favourite album by them
I'm surprised no one's mentioned Talking Heads' "Take Me to the River" cover of Al Green. A more recent favorite of mine is "No Quarter", originally by Led Zeppelin, covered by Tool.
Well, MC Music mentioned Talking Heads' "Take Me to the River" on Pg. 1. (I should add that to the Cool Songs of the 70s thread!) I've mentioned several, but I don't believe I've mentioned two by Camper Van Beethoven: "Pictures of Matchstick Men" originally by Status Quo and "Interstellar Overdrive" originally by Pink Floyd. If I've already mentioned them, please excuse my beer-soaked, Yoda-like brain. Ha!

In my defense, that first page is too much name-dropping to read. I didn't see any mention of Tricky's cover of "Black Steel" by Public Enemy, so I'll throw that one in the ring.
"Our Lips Are Sealed" by the Hippos (Go-Go's) "All Mixed Up" Red House Painters (Cars?) "The Drugs Don't Work" by Ben Harper (Verve) "Ring Them Bells" by Gordon Lightfoot (Bob Dylan) "Here" by Grandaddy (Pavement) "Spit On A Stranger" by Nickel Creek (Pavement) "When You Come Back Down" by Nickel Creek (Tim O'Brien) "River" by Travis (Joni Mitchell) "Waiting For Superman" by Iron and Wine (Flaming Lips)

I haven't read the thread at all so most of these are probably doubles: Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen) Johnny Cash - Hurt (Nine Inch Nails) Fiona Apple - Across the Universe (the Beatles) Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower (Bob Dylan)
here's a few excellent covers that I'm surprised no one has mentioned:
Devo - (I Can't Get No)Satisfaction (Rolling Stones) Social Distortion - Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash) Sex Pistols - (I'm Not Your)Stepping Stone (The Monkees)
