I am unashamed of my early U2 (late U2, a little ashamed), but as far as I can tell, Bruce is the new hotness. The Hold Steady sound like them, the Killers want to, and everyone in the world seems to want to compare tthe Arcade Fire to him nowadays.
------ Aren't there any girls out their who like good music? I need to and want to meet them. My favorite bands are Overkill River, The Nife, Songs:Ohio, and Nuetral Milk Hotel. Please let me know if your into indy music and like to go to show's and drink beer's and makeout.

Huh? People are comparing the Arcade Fire to Bruce Springsteen? Did I miss something?
I've read that on a few message boards actually. Mostly saying Win's vocals in some of the songs off the new album (Intervention, Black Wave/Bad Vibrations) sound Boss influenced.
Good to see some love for 'hot for teacher' - I checked it out again on youtube and you guys are right - it is a great song that balls along having so much fun - a pity more bands nowadays can't get the rock and the laughs rolling as good as this - and no, for me the Darkness don't count.
I guess I wasn't digging deep enough into true horrors - like Bryan Adams and the Hooters. Those albums are safe in storage which isn't the same as choosing to keep them but they are awful. I can't remember the titles of the albums but I think the Bryan Adams one was called Restless and I know it contained such gems as summer of 69 and heaven [shudder]. More amusing but still cringeworthy are the Hooters - all I remember is the song 'All you Zombies'.
I know many love Kiss but I am just happy I never owned any of their 'songs'.

Eagles of Death Metal.
Good call Dork - I had forgotten about them but then I have only heard one of the singles - is the album as a whole worth getting? Are there any others you can think of? I feel in the mood for a rock-n-roll around this weekend.

Absolutely. It is a very solid release, and I wish I had gotten it before the Jan. 15 deadline for the best albums of the year. Good stuff.

Seconded. EoDM is pretty great. Probably the most fun record of 2006.

It's quite funny how hypocrite people can be when it comes to music. In order to save your reputation as one of the cool kids (because that's what indie music has come to be: "I'm too cool to like your music") you actually evaluate the kind of music you will lead others to think you like? Probably if any of your (and mines) darling,avant-garde, hip indie bands finds mainstream success, you'll stop liking them a couple of years later because they sold out, right? It won't be cool to like them anymore right? Haha, it's amazing how stereotyped the indie scene has come to be (and I refer to the fanbase, not the music itself), really; it also follows trends and is extremely elitist and, frankly, full of sh... anyways, I like the music I like and I don't have to give explanations for my musical choices. Of course they've changed throughout the years, but nevertheless, I don't have to say things such as "I'm ashamed of listening to U2" so I can preserve my coolness...If I set my iPod to shuffle, you'll probably hear "one" by u2, followed by britney spears "toxic", some miles davis, followed by guns n roses, the cure, "the purple bottle" by animal collective, maybe some bob marley, frank sinatra, the shins, arcade fire, fiona apple, bob dylan, maybe some erasure, shakira, the beatles, elton john, led zepellin, of montreal, tlc, and maybe incomplete by the backstreet boys...ouch, I guess I'll never enter the club now, huh? and just out of pure curiosity, why the hell would it be shameful to like U2?

Shame really should have no place in music appreciation - but we are tribal animals and somewhere someone is excluding someone else to stake out their territory.
Still, nothing shameful about U2 whatsoever - most of their music has always been unfashionably earnest and pompous (except for their 90s irony stage) but it is also mostly heartfelt and incredibly rousing stuff. I happen to think their Rattle and Hum was a bloated piece of dull shite - but I can't see what would be shameful about someone even loving that.
Now the backstreet boys is another matter - not a matter of shame though, just a screamingly dull patch in the otherwise colourful and tasty bunch of music that you mention.

Completely disagree about the comparison - in fact for me Arcade Fire possess many of the colourful and imaginative qualities that the dusty old 'boss' precisely lacks. Not that there's anything wrong with being a gritty down to earth master storyteller - but my head is more like the room full of robotic toys in Bladerunner than a dusty sparse hot american room with a bottle of bourbon and sweat soaked singlet. If that makes any sense at all!

I wanted to create a reaction with the backstreet boys comment, haha, guess I got it... still, you got my point and I agree with you 100 %... is good to know there are still people who can respect others' opinnion no matter how baffled they may be by it...peace.

I don't think there's anything too shameful in any of the artists you mentioned, or for that matter Springsteen or U2 (even though I personally can't stand U2's music and detest Bono). I see where you're coming from, but think what you're saying is kind of a contradiction. The crux of what you're saying is that music is a personal thing, you should like what you like, and you shouldn't care what other people think. If you do, then you're a hypocrite, or you're trying to be cool.
However, if as you say, everyone has a right to like the music they like without being judged, then surely people have a right to hold opinions as to what music they own that they now feel embarrassed by ever buying, without being branded hypocritical or elitist.
For example, the first ever record I bought as a kid was Roland Rat: The Album. The first 45 I ever bought was the theme tune to Auf Wiedersehen Pet, closely followed by the 1986 Scotland World Cup Squad with "We're Making The Big Trip To Mexico". I'm fairly embarrassed by all these purchases. As I am with the purchases of albums by Paula Abdul, MC Hammer, and Paul McCartney's theme tune to "Spies Like Us".
I don't feel embarrassed by some of the things I own to impress people. I feel ashamed because in MY opinion they are awful. Who is anyone else to tell me I can't hold that opinion? I feel the attitude that "You're not allowed to be ashamed of anything you own" is just as pompous as claiming you're embarrassed by a certain band for reasons of "coolness", and some people have taken this thread way too seriously.
Just my opinion. If anyone wants the Roland Rat album, they can have it.
There's no direct musicological connection from Bruce Springsteen's music to Arcade Fire's music. Unless by "Bruce Springsteen" you mean "David Byrne".

Alright, I'm just gonna put this out there: Semi-Charmed Life is one of the best pop songs ever. The first time I heard it I was stunned. But other than that, yeah, you should feel guilty.
Mine is pretty bad too though...I have a weak spot for the New Radicals "Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too." Sure, the lyrics are completely embarrassing, but something about the sound and production really hits me just right. Especially on a long drive with the windows down (when it's warmer, of course).
Just make sure to turn it down when you're passing a car full of girls.

Wow. If you really have to be ashamed of playing U2 and Springsteen in front of your friends, you need new friends.
