I live in San Diego, and there's always been a very small, but typically decent music scene. Anything John Reis is in is guaranteed to be good. And everyone's crazy about the Muslims right now.

Um.. but it says you posted in the thread like 20 minutes before then. Whoah, worm hole!
Anyways, just moved to Lawrence, KS. I don't know if it has a local music scene anymore, but locals The Appleseed Cast is one of my favorite bands. Ad astra per aspera might appeal to some people here and Minus Story are on the Jagjaguwar label. The concert scene is relatively good for the standard fare indie circuit, as I've been to most of the venues here when I lived in Kansas City. Still not as good as Omaha.

i don't understand what you are trying to say? "20 minutes before then" - what/when is then? i created a new thread for local music, after failing to to find any threads for it through the search option, i then posted in it again, and a forum moderator then posted in the thread redirecting me back to this discussion (he also froze the new topic i started). i have subsequently started posting in this thread. how is this confusing?

reis is awesome - i love drive like jehu and hot snakes.
I didn't know you lived in Bloomington, crazed. Nice town. I think I've seen Murder By Death their three or four times.
I had a stick of CareFree gum, but it didn't work. I felt pretty good while I was blowing that bubble, but as soon as the gum lost its flavor I was back to pondering my mortality.

FREAK OUT

My town hardly has a decent music store. I have to order offline. and we are lucky to get one good concert every three years.
Okay... so I should be fair and say that there is a nice bit of Alaskan music that floats around, but it's all very... bumpkin... to my ears at least. I can hardly take most of it seriously. It's really it's own genre or, even in different genres, it's own flavor of music. I enjoy it when it's around, but it's like enjoying a Reneisance Fair. You really wouldn't want to take any of it home with you.

i wasn't freaking out, i'm just confused. you seemed upset and/or perturbed by something i had said, but i could not for the life of me figure out what had upset your delicate sensiblities, so i asked for you to explain yourself better. speaking of which, you still haven't explained what you meant.

I beg to differ. Or at least I would've when I was 12. I think I still have a wooden sword lying around somewhere.
Krug, it's not worth explaining because I don't remember why I wrote that nor do I want to take the time to figure it out again.

Man, I wish there was a "wooden swords" subforum where we could carry on an indepth conversation, because boy do I have stories to tell. We grew up running through the forest ambushing one another with swords. We were brutal with them too. Very physical, and aggresive in our fights. As young boys we would climb into bed at night dreaming about what section of the forest we had claimed as our kingdom that day, and what new sword we had carved our individual ruin into to be named as our own, and nursing our bruised knuckles and arms.
In my memory of my childhood, I grew up as a warrior king.

Iowa City is pretty much like Lawrence in that it is a Midwestern college town that gets more concerts than many of the (larger) cities around it. Quite a few groups stop by in between Omaha or Minneapolis and Chicago, we've had Iron & Wine, Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective, Wilco, Andrew Bird, Band of Horses, Okkervil River...etc. Plus we have two record stores.
However, we don't have a ton of local bands. I like this local folk artist named Caleb Engstrom. Otherwise, it's pretty much just kids in high school playing rock music.
Does Toronto have a music scene? Broken Social Scene Leslie Feist Metric The Hidden Cameras Holy Fuck Final Fantasy Crystal Castles K-OS Kardinal Offishall treble charger (who used to be good) The Horseshoe Tavern (legendary Stones performances, amongst other things) The El Mocambo The Silver Dollar Room (as seen in "Adventures In Babysitting") The Parkdale Revolutionary Orchestra Ron Sexsmith Rush The Brown Hornets Hostage Life The Flatliners Protest The Hero (Whitby, but close enough) The Beaches International Jazz Fest ill Scarlett The Junction Run With The Kittens Tokyo Police Club Barenaked Ladies Cowboy Junkies Death From Above 1979
Hmph. I think I've made the point. T.O. rules.

Yeah I'm going to have to echo the comment made by the Wichitan above.
Wichita is one of those cities where people driven by a desire to make money and settle down (a desire they don't know they possess), settle down. It's completely non-threatening and populated by people like them. It's an awful town. And the music scene is still dominated by nu-metal and new grunge acts. There's always good bluegrass, I must say. But overall---ick. A band with even the slightest avant garde tendecies would be mauled alive here. It simply is not a breeding ground for, um, you know, creative things. The art kids on campus here paint flowers and shit. So doncha know that any pamphlet that brags of its art scene, knows nothing of art (rule number 121).
I think I'm the first poster outside the U.S. and I hail from Dunedin NZ. We're tucked away at the bottom of New Zealand's South Island but it's a university town so there's a fairly decent music scene. A lot of local bands have an indie-pop bent but there is a lot of variety on offer. We've got a few 80's influenced techno acts going on and we also get some decent international acts (courtesy of the university of course). Yo La Tengo and The Cat Empire are two worthy of note.
