I don't think so... I think it's a little diffrent though. It's been defined for centuries that there are only 2 genres in performing arts; Drama and Comedy. And I agree with that, but defining films as "Action" and "Romance," I don't agree with.

Mr. Storm, the general consensus in theatrical circles is that plays can be categorised as either tragedy, (not drama) and comedy. Film is a very different beast, and I am yet to hear a filmmaker ever deny genre in this modern artform. I'm not sure why you are going down this rather indefensible route.

I always thought it would be interesting to define genre based on what effect it had on the listener... emotionally, I guess. That way it would be much easier to figure out what you wanted to hear, but of course every song on an album would be a different 'genre'. But then I know I'm a bit out to lunch because that's not really what genre is.. that's mood. But that is how I much prefer to categorize music. The whole genre thing can get out of hand and annoying quite easily, but I think that it can be useful just as long as nobody gets to caught up in it and everyone realizes that a song can easily belong to several different genres.. basically just a collection of adjectives to help us describe music.

In 335 BC, when Aristotle came up with that, yes. However in the intervening 2342 years, theatre criticism has developed and expanded significantly .

I hate it when the people at the record store divide their stock into too many categories and I have to look in 8 different sections before I finally find what I want in "Imports-Chillout" or some other category I had never conceived of.
And by the way, "chillout" is a genre name that I don't really get. It seems to mean dance music that you don't dance to. Or maybe I'm just being too literal in thinking dance music should be meant for dancing.

Thank the herd for this one. When I worked at a record store I begged to have the entire store in alphabetical order regardless of genre (with an exception for Classical, of course). Our store was pretty big (8000+ square feet). Customers just do not want to wade through that much product. Can you believe we had R&B and Rap separated?
