As some of you know Someone Great is my favorite song of the year. When the song came out I read a lot about it and heard it was about either a break up or a death. I liked the song so much that it wasn't that important to me which it was (they feel similar oftentimes). Anyway, yesterday my friend told me he thought it was about an abortion. I laughed it off, but after listening to the lyrics again I'm not so sure.

I was wondering if anyone knows for certain what the song is about. I don't mean to start a huge dialogue on the song, but I'm really interested now to know what the song is about. Thanks.

It's a really good song, but one of the reasons I didn't list it as one of my favorites is because I couldn't actually figure out what it's about.

Thanks, modest, but there doesn't seem to be much consensus. I already knew the lyrics, and the posters can't seem to agree either.

If you go in without a preconception, I think it could possibly be about an abortion. Especially the line "Your smaller than my wife imagined, surprised you were human." As terrible as it sounds, it could be a reference to an aborted baby.

But why would he have arguments with a fetus in the fetus's basement?

Ha Ha, funny. The arguments would be with his spouse about the possibility of an abortion.

I never thought this was what the song was about (a friend brought it up), so I'm not going to defend the possibility. But, when you read the lyrics I don't think it's out of the realm.

Maybe a miscarriage more than an abortion.

In any case, the lyrics do leave this pretty up to your imagination. So, plenty of people have plenty of interpretations...
