"Love over gold" Don Van Vliet
(this is what he wrote along with his signature when I groveled for an autograph at the Troubadour in the early '70s. Not having anything to write on, I appropriated the menu on the table we were sitting at and pushed it and a pen towards him as he sat down to spend some quality time with our starstruck party of four. The Captain was resplendent in a blue suit with red piping and cast a spell on us that has never really worn off. Yes, the very same suit that he's sporting on the cover of The Spotlight Kid album. Not terribly long after that the four of us reassembled at the Troubadour for two sets with Van Morrison and band that has been immortalized on the double album It's Too Late To Stop Now. But on this particular night, the Captain and his Magic Band were beyond sublime and generous to a fault. This night the Captain became my captain.) Needless to say I still have that menu.

That's a great story, sanford.

I don't know nearly enough about him to try and compile a list, but can I suggest Mark E. Smith?

I had a stick of CareFree gum, but it didn't work. I felt pretty good while I was blowing that bubble, but as soon as the gum lost its flavor I was back to pondering my mortality.

I think Smith is in the same camp as Pollard. If you're a fan, you could easily come up with a list of 100 Great songs-- mainly due to the shear amount of songs he's written. I know I've downloaded 65 songs onto my iTunes library (I'm generally pretty picky about what I choose to put on there), and I have only chosen songs from 13 of The Fall's albums.

The recent talk over in the Americana thread, has me seriously considering Bill Callahan of Smog. I've been revisiting all those old records recently, and definitely think his hit-to-miss ratio is pretty damn stellar.
