A quick scan of this thread reveals no mention of the excellent early 90s lesbian punk band Team Dresch, featuring Kaia Wilson, who has had her own solo career in addition to, of course, the Butchies. I could also name Cris Williamson and Meg Christian - they recorded a great live album together, not sure if it was ever issued onto CD - I found it for a couple bucks at a record store - and Phranc.

I've generally found queer-oriented music (i.e., not just incidentally gay but actively involved with queer issues) from females to be more interesting than from males, but I'm not sure why that is.

That's a pretty good list of bands with gay members, some of my favs being Sigur Ros (Jonsi), Grizzly Bear (I think they're mostly gay), Mew, Sleater-Kinney, The Velvet Underground (why does everyone forget them?), and possibly The Ramones (Dee Dee wrote 53rd & 3rd, allegedly from personal experience). Don't forget Bloc Party, either. Kele came out last year. Some say Nic Drake was gay, but it's hard to tell. Also Joy division's Ian Curtis was rumored to have dabbled a bit.

Hmmm.... I've never heard that about Nick Drake. Is there any actual evidence? Or is it just empty speculation based on the fact that he was "sensitive"?

Re Dee Dee Ramone -- being a gay hustler on occasion doesn't make you gay.

Ian Curtis -- If "dabbling" in gay sex means you are "gay", then most gay people (most of whom have had heterosexual sex) are "straight".
