1. Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet, Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main Street - The Gold Standard.
2. Velvet Underground - Nico, White Light/White Heat, Velvet Underground, Loaded. The only real challenger to Stones Hegemony.
3. Radiohead - The Bends, Ok Computer, Kid A, Amnesiac.
4. Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde, John Wesley Harding.
5. Led Zepplin - 1-4.
6. The Kinks - Funny Face, Something Else, Village Green, Lola
7. The Byrds - First 6 - Tambourine Man through Sweetheart of the Rodeo (Maybe the very longest consistenly excellent streak of any of the artists).
Can't Include the Beatles, Don't think it's fair to say Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt Peppers, White Album, Abbey Road, cause other Movie Soundtracks and collections where slipped in there (Help, Hey Jude, Magical Mystery Tour) and none of these are great.
Can't Include Springsteen, Cause I think the River blows.
Can't included REM, every third album was a dud or near dud (Fables, Green, Monster).
The Who's albums were off and on.
U2, like the Beatles, always had a throw away release to screw up the chain.
Like the mention of the early Talking Heads, but to be honest, if I had to, Mott The Hoople, an all but forgotten glam band, might be next with Their s/t debut, Brain Capers, All the Young Dudes, and Mott.
No love for Houses of the Holy Illiniq? Following up Zep IV must've been tough, but I think they did a pretty good job. Houses contains some pretty sweet tunes. I don't think Zep had a real misfire until [i]Physical Graffiti[i]...the cursed double album.

Well, Michigan is closest to Illinois in style, but my favorite album of his is Seven Swans, which is pretty much all amazing acoustic stuff. No orchestra songs, which I like least of his stuff.

1. The New Pornographers 2. Okkervil River (some people don't like "Don't Fall in Love with Everyone You See" but I love it) 3. Led Zepplin 4. Modest Mouse (from their early stuff up until "Good News for People Who Love Bad News" streak over) 5. Tom Waits (does this guy ever release bad albums?)
I never hated any of you/I loved you all at the time
For my money, The Pernice Brothers have yet to put out a bad album. They are at five and counting. Many think their first is their weakest, and they may be true, but it's still pretty damn good.

I used to wonder if I was the world's biggest Pernice Brothers fan. I think "The World Won't End" and "Yours, Mine & Ours" are absolute masterpieces, but I think the latest is only pretty good. I'm also partial to "Overcome by Happiness" over "Discover a Lovelier You".
Hard to beat the four Uncle Tupelo albums in my book.

I have to say that soundtrack or not, I think Magical Mystery Tour is underrated and indeed great. Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields and All You Need Is Love are probably enough on their own to do that, although the rest is good too (Walrus, Fool on the Hill, etc.).
are we talking about a short string of really great albums, or a long streak of solid albums? 'cuz for overall consistency, i'd reach for Matt Johnson and The The anyday...
soul mining, infected, mind bomb, dusk, solitude, and hanky panky are all incredible and worth checking out.
I'm not going to even bother putting up any of the Cure's albums, because as most of you may know (or now know), they're my favorite band, so I will just end up putting all of their albums .
Phallus Dei, Yeti, Tanz der Lemminge - Amon Duul II

Faust, So Far, The Faust Tapes, Faust IV - Faust
Trans-Europe Express, The Man-Machine, Computer World - Kraftwerk
At Dawn, It Still Moves, Z - My Morning Jacket
Power Corruption & Lies, Low-Life, Brotherhood, Technique - New Order

The Bends, OK Computer, Kid A, Amnesiac - Radiohead
Agaetis Byrjun, ( ), Takk... - Sigur Ros
Talking Heads: 77, More Songs About Buildings & Food, Fear Of Music, Remain In Light - Talking Heads
The White Stripes, De Stijl, White Blood Cells - The White Stripes
Scott, Scott 2, Scott 3, Scott 4 - Scott Walker
Knife Play, A Promise, Fabulous Muscles - Xiu Xiu
---------------------------------------- "You're half the man Peter Pan could have been"
David Bowie - TMWSTW, Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Alladin Sane
REM - Murmur, Reckoning, Fables, Life's Rich Pageant, Document, Green
Spoon - A Series of Sneaks, Girls Can Tell, Kill The Moonlight, Gimme Fiction
Ditto re the above - especially pleased to see some recognition of the ongoing brilliance of Spoon.
Re REM - I never liked document and like it less now (the production sucks - too tidy/flat - but then Fables is my fave with its murky echoes!) but I recognise it as a well written cohesive album that stands out from the pack at the time.

I don't like Document either (apart from the singles from it), but Murmur, Reckoning, Fables, and Life's Rich Pageant is still a good run. They've generally had a good run (which ended after Up).
As for the overall winner, I'd have to go for the Rolling Stones (Beggars to Exile).
