A TRULY guilty pleasure, to piggyback on Biggles' Michael Jackson comment, would be a musician who committed a fairly repugnant crime. The one that leaps to mind would be Charles Manson, although I hesitate to call him a "musician."
I can't think of too many other of these literally guilty pleasures...I guess there's the Jerry Lee Lewis marrying his young cousin thing. And there was a guy who played with Mellencamp for years who traifficked in child porn.
Subtopic in this thread: anyone got others?

I do what?? I think the music i listen to is cool yes...and if someone else is bashing it i may say something. I guess what i like is not that guilt worthy.I inheritley stay away from the radio on most occasions.
Originally posted by Biggles: Also, Michael Jackson. I'm surprised he hasn't been mentioned yet (as far as I can see).
I don't know if it would even be something to feel guilty about if he weren't an alleged paedophile and overall nutcase.
I'm with pE, Biggles. This is a really good point.
Over the past year, I've been following the other high-profile criminal case against a well-known musical figure, Phil Spector. I have always enjoyed Spector's work, which is genius, with a nagging discomfort over the way he treated the women in his life, especially Ronnie Spector. If he's convicted of murder, that nagging discomfort will only grow.
I don't expect the musicians I like to be flawless human beings. Goodness knows I still listen to Miles Davis on a weekly basis. In the case of Spector (and Michael Jackson, if he's found guilty), these are hard acts to overlook.
I still listen to Bringing Down The Horse. Not that often, but I enjoy it when I do. Even though One Headlight was a big hit and makes Cinderella references.
And even though 'Breach' wasn't so hot.
But I heard the new single off their website? I like it. I'll have to keep an eye on what the critics say about the new album (24th).

I like the Wallflowers. And I don't feel guilty about it one bit. The first two records were good pop-rock. 'Breach' wasn't very good, but 'Red Letter Days' had some good songs on it.
They've fallen far enough that they're playing a fairly small club here in St Louis...I'm gonna try and get one of my discs signed. I've got Bob Dylan's autograph...I'm psyched to go second generation!

Yes.

We've already suggested some reasons to feel geniunely guilty about listening to a certain artist.
(mid-to-late 50's vocal harmony...) think: The Fleetwoods, Four Freshmen, etc
The Association Hall & Oates Phil Collins Soundgarden (yes, I know this may strike some as an odd choice... but they never were critical darlings and are even less regarded 10 years or so after their zenith).
That's kind of all over the place I know but...hey.
Soundgarden is listed in the same class as Nirvana as far as grunge goes. And I know Superunknown retrospectively got quite a bit of critical praise. At least, it's almost in the pazz n jop top ten for it's year, so that tells you something.
A lot of people hate Soundgarden (And all grunge for that matter), but not enough to constitute guilt, unless you're hanging out in a real indie-snobbish crowd.
I at least think Superunknown is a great album and Badmotorfinger is a good one.
One of my biggest guilt pleasures is Epitaph punk band NOFX. They're essentially punk revivalists who focus on fast tempos and rather juvenile lyrics. Always fun to listen to, though.
Another more recent guilty pleasure is Kelly Clarkson. I wouldn't exactly blast it as I speed down the highway but I can listen to it.
A few bands I like that aren't too well received critically:
--Alkaline Trio --Phantom Planet --Diapatch --Nickel Creek --No Use For A Name --Plain White T's --Something Corporate
Ahhh, I saw Phantom Planet live. I like a few of their songs, but they're a little too vanilla for me. The funny thing was that they covered Fugazi that night and it was the best thing they did.
As for Nickel Creek, they're actually pretty good. Very good musicians. They do a cover of "Spit on a Stranger" that (in my opinion) trumps Pavement's original. Not bad at all.
