We haven't played this game in a while...I can't take credit for this one. It comes from XM radio's Fred station. They've got a show, "Six Degrees of Fred" that does these sorts of things.
The connections can be band members, producers, engineers, songwriters, appearances on the same compiliation, or guest performers on the album. I'll give you all seven steps...fill in what you can! I knew steps 2-5, but not 1-2 or 5-6-7.
1. The Waterboys-Fisherman's Blues 2. Prefab Sprout-Appetite 3. Thomas Dolby-Hyperactive! 4. Lene Lovich-New Toy 5. Nina Hagen-Don't Kill the Animals 6. Howard Jones- Get To Know You Well 7. The Fixx-Outside
Sorry for the double post...here's another set of them, for those who are more rock than new wave:
1. New Order: Confusion 2. Debbie Harry: Bike Boy 3. The Cult: Love Removal Machine 4. Poe: Trigger Happy Jack 5. Social Distortion: Bad Luck 6. Danzig: Mother 7. Red Hot Chili Peppers: Give It Away 8. Jane's Addiction: Idiots Rule

Since these two posts haven't gotten any love, I thought I'd post the answers, if anyone cares.
Dave Ruffy played drums on 1 and 2. Tom Dolby produced 2 and sang 3. "New Toy" is a cover of a Dolby song. #5 features duet vocals between Lovich and Hagen. 5 and 6 both appear on the same PETA compilation. Howard Jones, singer of 6, produced the Fixx.

I knew 1-2, 3-4, 5-6-7-8.
Answers:
1 and 2 were produced by Arthur Baker. 2 and 3 both feature vocals by Ian Astbury. 3 and 4 feature drums by Matt Sorum. 4 and 5 were both produced by Dave Jerden. 5 and 6 have drumming by Chuck Biscuits. 6 and 7 were both produced by Rick Rubin and appeared on Def American. 7 and 8 feature Flea: as bassist on 7 and playing the trumpet on 8.
How did this game get buried? It sounds fun. Here's one: Traveling Wilburys to Elliot Smith - three (four if you count hopping from a person in one band to another in the same band) steps.
Hey Sinister, one way to link the Traveling Wilburys and Elliott Smith in one step is that Elliott Smith recorded at Abbey Road and so too did George Harrison. I guess that's sort of lame, but what was the actual answer?
Also, the "Thoughts on Songs" Thread had me thinking. I think this thread died because it is a bit difficult. I propose we simplify things a bit. Just pick two musical items. It can be two songs, two albums, two bands, two soundtracks, etc. And the next poster has to guess what the common thread is between the two. I'll go first with an easy one:
"Candy" by Iggy Pop
and
"Me In Honey" by REM

Great. I can't remember. I know it involved Jenny Lewis' cover of "Handle with Care" in which Ben Gibbard and M. Ward sang.

Just for the record, I think it's okay to use outside resources for this game (unlike the guess the song thread). Some of them wont be painfully obvious.

Well, in that case, the answer is Jimmy Page played guitar on both tracks as a session musician. I had to do some homework on that. Not even Wikipedia could help me.
Otis Redding
and
Britney Spears
P.S. The answer is not that they both dated K-Fed.
----- We were wasps with new wings, now we're bugs in the jar.
They both covered the Rolling Stone's "Satisfaction."
The Modern Lovers
AND
The Talking Heads

Probably my favorite producer: Todd Rundgren handled both of those albums.
Peter Case
AND
Mark Olson

I spent way too much time figuring this one out, but this is what I came up with (thanks to your hint!):
1. "Handle with Care" is a song by Traveling Wilburys. 2. Which was covered by Jenny Lewis with Ben Gibbard on vocals. 3. Ben Gibbard's side project the Postal Service remixed "Do You Realize??" by the Flaming Lips on the Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell EP. 4. Steven Drozd of the Flaming Lips played drums on Elliott Smith's final album, From A Basement on the Hill
I don't know if that's how you got there-- I'm not sure how to do it in three moves.
