Along the lines of the Fun Movie Game (in the Actors and Actresses thread), let's play the same game with musicians.

Pick two musicians and see if you can connect them through the other artists they've played with. On record is preferred, but reasonable live performances together can be accepted, provided they were fairly frequent (playing one song at one show is a little wonky).

This first one is for mark f....

Connect Paul Kelly with Sleater-Kinney. Three steps should do it.

If you get it right, you get to pick the next pairing...

Anybody who wants to help me out or answer on their own, go for it. I don't know the answer, but my first idea is to try to hook up Sleater-Kinney's first drummer, the Australian woman, to Paul Kelly.

I spent about an hour Google-monkeying that connection and finally gave up.

It's a hard one.

Paul Kelly played harmonica on Grant McClennan's solo record "Fireboy." Grant was in the Go-Betweens, whose reunion record featured all of the members of Sleater Kinney as the backing band for he and Robert Forster, along with Adele Pickvance.

Somebody else go...I was obviously setting the bar WAAY too high...

Steven Tyler of Aerosmith to Jeff Tweedy of Wilco.

It takes about six steps to get there.

Yeah, I suppose 6 is a little ridiculous...

I'll get the first few out of the way:

1) Steve Tyler - singer, Aerosmith to
2) Jack Douglas - producer, Aerosmith / Cheap Trick to
3) Tom Petersson - bass player, Cheap Trick

Your puzzle took Megatron .034 seconds to complete. Tom Peterson played bass in Swag with Ken Coomer, who played drums in Wilco before they became an adult contemporary group. Now Megatron is The Quizmaster! Prepare your puny brain for this deliciously simple riddle:

Connect Alice Cooper to Matthew Sweet in four steps. Begin . . . now!

Quit your pathetic struggling. Megatron will now give you a clue:

Dick Wagner played guitar in Alice Cooper's group in the mid '70s and Lou Reed's band in the late '70s.

Lou Reed did a song called "Sweet" Jane and had a "Girlfriend" named Laurie Anderson.

There now, that one's done....who's next?

By the way, that Dick Wagner/Steve Hunter guitar intro on "Rock and Roll Animal" was Sweet, too.

Megatron will now reveal the answer:

1. Alice Cooper's band / Dick Wagner
2. Dick Wagner / Lou Reed's "Rock 'N Roll Animal"
3. Lou Reed's "The Blue Mask" / Robert Quine
4. Robert Quine / Matthew Sweet's "Girlfriend"

That was a good one, Megatron. I would have played but I was away from the computer for a while.

Try this one (I'm not sure how many steps, but I think you can do it in 3 or 4):

Joe Strummer to Diana Krall.

Joe Strummer's death tribute at the Grammys was led by Elvis Costello, who is married to Krall. =]

Was Elvis Costello raising money to kill Joe Strummer? That's in poor taste. If only it was a "death tribute" to Barbara Streisand, then Megatron would have contributed generously.

Nice one, Megatron. You've been on a roll lately.

You can do it that way, but I was thinking of a slightly different route that involves artists who played or produced on each other's records...

1. Joe Strummer was a member of the Pogues in 1999 with (among others)
2. Spider Stacey and Jem Finer who had been in the Pogues in 1985 when the Pogues were produced by
3. Elvis Costello, who is married to and co-writes songs with
4. Diana Krall!

That's exactly the way I was going to do it, but I thought it would be cheating because Costello produced but didn't play on "Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash." Somebody else offer one because I'd say something like Lawrence Welk and Thom Yorke. Try it if you dare.

Child’s play, Mark!

1. The Lawrence Welk orchestra featured famed dixieland clarinetist Pete Fountain.
2. Pete Fountain played on Dr. John’s album “Goin’ Back to New Orleans”
3. Dr. John plays piano on the Spiritualized album “Ladies and Gentlemen . . . "
4. Ex-Spiritualized member (and the future Mrs. Megatron) Kate Radley appears on the Verve’s “Urban Hymns”
5. Richard Ashcroft of The Verve is also a member of the electro-crap supergroup UNKLE with Thom "Bad Teeth" Yorke.

…thereby proving that Lawrence Welk is the forefather of avant-garde alternative rock music. Now what do I win?

Sorry i do not know if any of that is right. But i know that neither thom yorke or richard ashcroft is officially part of the group. They did participate on the 'Psyense Fiction' Album.Which i am a fan of.

I am prety sure UNKLE is mainly James Lavelle and whoever he can snatch to work on it with. The first album in question was produced by lavelle and DJ Shadow.Which is why it garnered so much acclaim i am sure.

Off the point the new UNKLE album is total crap.Wank job sell out of an album.Which we all probabbly could have forseen happening.
