Yeah, I absolutely thought that the New Radicals CD was one of the most overlooked ever and I'm glad I liked their hit single and bought the album. I would have loved to see them live.
A truly marvellous list of choices, you guys…..special nods to the people who mentioned:
Radiohead, Yo La Tengo, Air, MBV, Bjork, Jeff Buckley, Smashing pumpkins, Beck, A Tribe called quest, Dr Octagon, Sonic Youth, Basement Jaxx, Beck, Pavement, Beastie Boys, Flaming Lips, Portishead Primal Scream, Underworlds, Belle & Sebastian, Chemical Brothers, Elliott Smith, Boards of Canada, Bonnie Prince, Nas, Nirvana, Los Lobos, REM, Prodigy, the Roots, Fountains of wayne, Lucinda Williams, Aphex Twin, Tortoise, Buena Vista, Dirty Three…..
Me….I’ll going to settle with (for now):
Ltj Bukem - “Logical Progression” Stereolab – “Aluminum Tunes: Switched on, Vol 3” Material – “Hallucination Engine” Wu Tang Clan – “Enter The Wu-Tang (36 chambers)” Pearl Jam – “Ten” Tricky – “Maxinquaye” Mercury Rev – “deserter’s Songs” Praxis – “Transmutation (Mutatis Mutandis) Massive Attack – “Blue Lines” Fugazi – “Repeater” Dj Shadow – “Entroducing”
1 Superchunk "foolish" 2 Sebadoh "bakesale" 3 Elliott Smith "either/or" 4 Archers of Loaf "icky mettle" 5 Beck "odelay" 6 Sunny Day Real Estate "how it feels..." 7 Braid "frame and canvas" 8 Nirvana "in utero" 9 Ben Folds Five "s/t" 10 Weezer "pinkerton"
after much deliberation, here is what i've come up with:
10. olivia tremor control - dusk at the cubist castle 09. blur - 13 08. beastie boys - check your head 07. brainiac - hissing prigs in the static couture 06. belle and sebastian - if you're feeling sinister 05. eels - electro-shock blues 04. super furry animals - radiator 03. radiohead - ok computer 02. dismemberment plan - emergency & i 01. neutral milk hotel - in the aeroplane over the sea (probably the greatest thing ever)
------------------------- Many years ago we found that light and sound were ample food.
Surprisingly (or not) I only had to fill in a few holes from my Desert Island Discs list. I, too, am a product of the '90s...
1) R.E.M. - Automatic for the People 2) Radiohead - OK Computer 3) U2 - Achtung Baby 4) Social Distortion - Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell 5) Pearl Jam - Ten 6) Jeff Buckley - Grace 7) Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes 8) Guided by Voices - Bee Thousand 9) Elliott Smith - XO 10)The Flaming Lips – The Soft Bulletin
I'm glad you reworked your desert island list to fit the 90s, aeshadow. Somehow, I missed the mention of Social Distortion's Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell that time around. Now that you've mentioned it again, I think it's going to have to knock Lucinda Williams off my list and drop it in front of Iris DeMent. I think a few tracks SBH&H have been part of the pre-show mix at every Springsteen tour since the album came out.
You set me to thinking. I checked out the band's Web site and was happy to find a news item dated June 19th indicating they're in the studio mixing a new album. I couldn't be happier. I was afraid we wouldn't see another after Dennis Dannell died in 2000.
Thanks for jogging my poor memory!
Now Playing: "Visions" Stevie Wonder Innervisions (Motown)
Soundgarden, Superunknown (No-one's mentioned them yet?!) Oasis, (What's the Story) Morning Glory? Radiohead, OK Computer Dead Can Dance, Aion Ghazal, As Night Falls on the Silk Road Future Sound of London, Lifeforms Phish, A Picture of Nectar King's X, Faith, Hope, Love Loreena McKennitt, Book of Secrets Midnight Oil, Earth and Sun and Moon

That's a nice, power pop friendly, list. I would put Bandwagonesque ahead of Nirvana. It's nice to see someone else who knows Kon Tiki...

Nice list. I think I prefer Harris' Scorn work over Napalm Death, though. Of course, Thrash metal was never my thing. Good call on the LPD also.

I like Scorn too but I prefer Old Lady Drivers w/ James Plotkin, the underground Zappa, whose grindcore origins mutated to industrial and dark electronic realms. Jon Zorn contributes a sax solo in Lo Flux Tube and Musical Dimensions of Sleakstak, Formula are excellent too. Napalm Death is a long time favourite band of mine. Scum and From Enslavement to Obliteration were a huge factor on Zorn taking the punk/ grind jazz, under 1 min burst route in the late 80s.
Another 90s favourite of mine is the Japanese band Boris' Absolutego. Close to an hour of the heaviest possible drone. They take their name from the Melvins' Bullhead opener. Their albums were out on Fangs Anal Satan but soon went OOP I guess. Absolutego was reissued in 2001 on Southern Lord.
Oh, btw Lancaster County Prison's album doesn't belong on the list since it's a 2000 one. I'm getting too used to mentioning it that it had to run over here haha.
Sorry to come in late, Hemorrohoids, but I'm glad to see a little love for Randy Newman's Bad Love and Loudon Wainwright III's Career Moves. Terrific albums from a couple of masters.
i know it's the last album of their dubious recording career, and that it's basically a Frank Black solo album, but anybody who throws in the Pixies "Trompe le Monde" will have to admit it deserves a mention as possibly the most overrated and written off record in recent memory. And no, i'm not just saying this because the Pixies are back en vogue.
Hey, Steven, can you clarify what the hell you said or at least mean? Dubious recording career? Most-overrated AND written-off? I think you like the album, but it's hard to know for sure. I LIKE it.
