Good call on the Built to Spill choice. I would say "Distopian Dream Girl" is their best song. But "Car" is also perfect in everyway.

Note: the last five spots are set aside for albums I strongly think would be somewhere in my top 50, but (even though I do own them) haven't fully digested. Therefore, it would be premature to rank them elsewhere.

Someone noted how weak the 90s was in the context of rock. While I agree with this for the most part (I'd argue the 80s were slightly worse), as a counterpoint I'd like to point out the plethora of great hip-hop albums that came out in the 90s. I'd venture to say that the 90s was easily the best decade for rap. It all evens out.

Hey, I just saw this, thanks for the comments. I love that Buena Vista Social Club album, it’s overlooked if you ask me. And you are right on Built to Spill, they are a great band. I had a top 100 with a couple of their other albums on it but Tony asked for a Top 50 so he could compile some kind of consensus. He hasn't posted anything yet so maybe it fell through.

Haven't really listened to enough 90's music beyond Hip-Hop, but my top ten would be almost competely made up of albums from Outkast (their first three), Bjork (Post, Homogenic, Vespertine) and a couple from the Smashing Pumpkins. Illmatic and Only Built... up their too.

No Liquid Swords?

I had a stick of CareFree gum, but it didn't work. I felt pretty good while I was blowing that bubble, but as soon as the gum lost its flavor I was back to pondering my mortality.

Yeah Liquid Swords as well, plus Mobb Deep's The Infamous as well which seems to be underrepresented in this thread.

Actually that one seems to be pretty underrepresented on MC in general. It's a pretty damn good one.

Which I find rather odd, since its grimy level is on par with anything the GZA and Raekwon put out, and it has one of the greatest Hip-Hop tracks ever in Shook Ones. Wink

1. Nirvana - Nevermind
2. Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
3. Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted
4. Oasis - (Whats the Story) Morning Glory?
5. The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin
6. Primal Scream - Screamadelica
7. Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
8. Elliott Smith - Either/Or
9. Guided by Voices - Bee Thousand

These are just my favorites from the 90s, however... If we're talking most influential or whatever I'd probably pick a few others.

I'm not sure exactly how long my list would be, nor where the following would rank (and these are strictly favourites of mine), but it would include, in no particular order:

Little Earthquakes - Tori Amos
Homogenic - Björk
When the Pawn... - Fiona Apple
Mezzanine - Massive Attack
OK Computer - Radiohead
The Downward Spiral - Nine Inch Nails
Endtroducing... - DJ Shadow
Songs of Faith and Devotion - Depeche Mode
Ágætis Byrjun - Sigur Rós
To Bring You My Love - PJ Harvey
Portishead - Portishead
69 Love Songs - The Magnetic Fields
Grace - Jeff Buckley
Deep Forest - Deep Forest

I'm sure there are a lot more, and I'll kick myself later for forgetting something, but those are definitely loved albums from the 90's.
