every summer, there are a couple ubiquitous pop songs that somehow work their way into the conscience of the masses. last summer's radio waves were dominated by "Sexyback", "Maneater", "Promiscuous", and "Crazy". am i missing any?

the summer of 2007 hasn't seemed to have a gargantuan song yet. do you think this is true? if not, what is the defining song of this summer?

Ugh... maybe "Umbrella," regretfully so. I really hate that song.

Ugh. That has to be the most annoying song ever. Ever.

I like it. Smiler

As for my song of the summer, I usually pick one of those from less mainstream sources. "You Got Yr Cherry Bomb" by Spoon and "Kid Gloves" by Voxtrot have been my summer songs.

"When Irish Eyes Are Burning" by the IRA (the best Clash song in over 20 years)
"Nobody Wants To" by Crowded House
"300 M.P.H. Torrential Outpour Blues" by the White Stripes
"Brain Damage Situation" by They Might Be Giants

"Naked Woman, Naked Man
Where did you get that nice sun tan?"

"Umbrella" is a great song. I don't think there's been any radio hits on par with that yet, although I haven't really been listening to the radio at all. Maybe "Big Things Poppin"? I think that's getting a lot of play...

edit: I don't really like the song but Justice - D.A.N.C.E. probably qualifies for a lot of people.

There are a few sweet summer jams out there:

Feist - "1 2 3 4"
Spoon - "The Underdog"
The New Pornographers - "Myriad Harbor"
The IRA - "8 More Days Till the 4th of July"

I never hated any of you/I loved you all at the time

No way, José!! "Umbrella" is terrible. She can't sing worth a damn and the beat is W-E-A-K. I swear if I hear another person singing "ella, ella, ella" while I'm walking down the street, I will hang myself.

As long as we're being optimistic about potential summer hits though, I'd like to second the Spoon and Feist mentions, however, NOT "Myriad Harbor." I know it's a popular song on these forums, but I hate it.

And oh man, "D.A.N.C.E." sure would be a nice crossover hit, wouldn't it? Also, I know it has gotten mixed reviews by critics and Metacritic users alike, but there are a handful of tracks from Sky Blue Sky that qualify as GREAT summer listening, most notably the title track, IMHO. Oh, and Dandelion Gum also has quite a few nice summery songs now that I think of it.

And let's not forget the ENTIRETY of Person Pitch, the most warm and joyous album of the bunch! Smiler

By the way, I get the impression that Fitz was talking about mainstream radio hits. So far, "Umbrella" and "Big Things Poppin" are the only two songs I've seen mentioned that fit that criteria.

As much as I would enjoy it, Spoon, Feist, and the New Pornos aren't being played on mainstream radio.

We can still hope, right?

I really like Umbrella except for the terrible Jay Z intro. That hurts my ears' brains, and I beg for an alternate version without it.

Rihanna's voice is perfect for the song...all cold and detached and whiny. Love the bass synth part...great, great, great...

That's what I originally thought. In terms of mainstream songs, I haven't really fallen for one since "Give It To Me" (though it was released before summer) and I suppose the most I could hope for is... maybe... "Tenderoni" by Chromeo...? "Needy Girl" was in a commercial I saw last night... They definitely have crossover potential.

And I suppose there's always "Lip Gloss".....

What station do you listen to? Maybe everybody can post that here? I listen to none, so that's why my post is nonsensical.

There's no way "Umbrella" is better than "Promiscuous". "Umbrella" isn't even better than Fergie's "London Bridge".

Great song.

I agree with "the underdog" for summer song too.

I obviously have a brain problem situation since the real title is "Brain Problem Situation". Red Face

Thanks!
