1. The Futureheads - The Futureheads 2. The Arcade Fire - Funerals 3. The Decemberists - The Tain 4. A.C. Newman - The Slow Wonder 5. Mission of Burma - ONoffON
I have the Mission of Burma (purchased with their prior album). It's damned good. Don't ask me why. I ain't pitchfork, or the other fishwraps which try to explain the unexplainable. Just get it.
Also, if you're so inclined, go ahead and get the Judas Priest Box set: "Metalogy" It kicks more ass than I care to explain.
The A.C. Newman record is pretty good. I think there are others who lurk around these forums who will rave on it more than I do, but it's a nice little pop record. "The Town Halo" is one of my favorite songs this year and the whole record is pretty solid. It's not my favorite thing he's done (I'll take the second New Pornographers record or either Zumpano record before this one) but it's well worth your listening dollar, particularly if you like pop.
Futureheads is a lot of fun, especially if you're into The Cars, etc..
I just got Arcade Fire, and I'm still not sure if it's deserving of all the hype. Still, it's got some great songs, and the instrumentation is fantastic throughout.

RayRay, these are the two greatest music reviews I have read since J.D. Considine's "Short Takes" in Musician Magazine and the single funniest thing written on these forums since their inception.
Musichead, I like the Mission of Burma as well, though I'm on the fence about buying it yet. I'm also one of the people pE referred to regarding the A.C. Newman in that it's receiving raves from me. His point is well taken, though, I would certainly own a copy of last year's New Pornographers before picking it up.
Now Playing: "I Wish I Had An Evil Twin" The Magnetic Fields i streaming on Seattle's KEXP
I really would like to know about that arcade fire album also?It has gotten freakishly good reviews everywhere i happen to look! But i will wait to hear what some of ya'll have to say about it.
I finally got a chance to listen to The Futureheads album yesterday. I can see where all of the comparisons to The Cars and XTC are coming from and agree it's much fun. I'll be curious as to what kind of staying power it has with me, listening-wise.
Now Playing: "How High The Moon" Art Tatum Piano Starts Here (Columbia)

QUOTE] I just got a copy of that and fell in love within a couple of songs. I think it's wonderful stuff - up there with anything released this year
after a few listens, i would have to say arcade fire is gonna be hard to beat out for my favorite of the year. this type of hype has only been this deserved for a few other records, such as broken social scene and m83. to me, the arcade fire belongs in that class, no doubt about it.
Looking forward to buying just one album at the moment:
Death From Above 1979 - You're a Woman, I'm a Machine
In case noboby knows, they are a two-piece band with no guitar, just bass, drums, and keyboards (and lead vocals from the drummer). They are kind of pop-rock/heavy metal/grunge/rock&roll/punk. I've heard one of their songs (Romantic Rights) and it's incredible.
The Arcade Fire album is pretty amazing, and pretty deservant of all the hype it's received, in my opinion. Its unbelievable melodies and smart songwriting/instrumentation really do it for me. Download "wake up" by them off of www.insound.com/mp3/ and if you're not sold, than who knows. It's an amazing song I think, but it doesn't really sound like the rest of the album because all the songs are pretty unique in their own way. There's some heavy emphasized downbeat songs on here, there's some acoustic backed songs, as well as piano. It's really good if you ask me, and I side with the critics on this one, which I don't normally do (Blueberry Boat??? what?!)
This doesn't have to do with this particular thread. I just wanted to post something.
Hey, it's me. I'm posting from the library by where I live. I get my internet hooked up on the 19th. No internet sucks erect penis, and I wanted you all to know I haven't forgotten about you all. I haven't heard a new album in over a month. Kind of a blessing since it gives me the time to listen to the albums on my computer that I have ignored.
I really want to hear SMiLE, especially after seeing the Pitchfork review and the Metacritic score. I also will need to look through these posts and Pitchfork, etc. to catch up with all of you on the new hip sounds. You know it kills me not to be up on the newest shit.
Lately, my five most listened to albums would be:
Saturday Looks Good To Me - Every Night Aesop Rock - Bazooka Tooth Tamion 12 Inch - All Black, Eyes Closed to the Excess of Disaster EP Broadcast - Haha Sound Spoon - Girls Can Tell
I can recommend all five of those, as I've enjoyed them all quite a bit. Though, the Tain is not something I can listen to every day. Still good, though.
I'd say Arcade Fire is really worth getting. It's definantly up there with the best albums of the year.
Although I didn't really enjoy the Futureheads album as much as I though I would. I'm more of a post-punk fan than new wave, but I thought I'd give it a go, and was kinda dissappointed.
