On my own desert island discs post, I included, for example, "The Roches", an album I have listened to hundreds and hundreds of times and seem never to get tired of. But do I think it is greater than "Blonde on Blonde" or "Revolver" or "London Calling"? No.
I didn't say that DID and Greatest albums aren't different; I just said that most people treat them as the same.
I just find that the MORE discussion topics there are on this system, the LESS likely I am to check them out. If there were a manageable number to review, I would check them out. As it is, I only visis seven or eight.

I don't particularly care for classic rock and pop, so my choices will obviously be more modern. People most definitely won't agree. Perhaps my choices are more accurately my top 10 of the 80s/90s/00s. Oh well, here goes. 1. In The Aeroplane Over The Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel The LARGEST gap in the history of gaps... 2. Illinois - Sufjan Stevens 3. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot - Wilco 4. The Soft Bulletin - Flaming Lips 5. OK Computer - Radiohead 6. Brian Wilson - SMiLE 7. Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven - GY!BE 8. Mermaid Avenue, Volume II - Billy Bragg & Wilco 9. Engineers - Engineers 10. Zen Arcade - Husker Du

Where in hell are the Beatles and Dylan? Even one side of some of those are WAY awesome, but I'm old, so don't listen to me, even though I love an apparently limited amount of modern music. P.S. Roxy Music, Dave Edmunds, Wire, Undertones, etc. rule, etc. Wow! I do write damn fine criticism, do I?

I wouldn't know where to start with The Beatles and Bob Dylan and other classic artists. My parents have a collection of about a thousand albums, most of which I think are great but can't get into with my taste in music. I wouldn't argue that my favorite albums are better, but I can relate to them. I lsten to older music occasionally, but I think if I put Bob Dylan on my iPod (actually not a good example, I like Bob Dylan a lot more than others), I would probably never listen to it. I obviously can't connect to the music the way my parents can... I wasn't even alive for the Pixies. Basically, I can appreciate and enjoy most of the classic albums, I just LIKE recent music better and listen to it much more. Except the Rolling Stones. Except for that album with the funky cover, I don't like them.

I'm not telling you to change, but keep those ears and that heart open. Great music is ageless. Beatles: Abbey Road from "I Want You" to the end, that's a start, even if "Come Together" is awesome.

I know every second of the Beatles music by heart. Both my parents worship them. I suppose I forgot about that.

I actually like most of the albums you listed, with the exception of the Microphones, so I don't think our tastes are that different. I think you might like some of these classic albums based on your list. I omitted anything released after 1980. Lou Reed - Street Hassle or TransformerRoxy Music - SirenDavid Bowie - The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust Donovan - Hurdy Gurdy ManPink Floyd - AnimalsBig Star - Third/Sister LoversThe Cure - Seventeen SecondsNot a complete list by any means, but maybe worth checking out to expand your horizons a bit.
