I really couldn't argue with anything on this list, TWM. It's pretty solid. The jury might still be out on Outkast and SMiLE, but they're fair choices.

I'm sure it could be adjusted slightly, but I like the looks of that list as well.
Now if I did that list with personal bias just my favourite 10. 3 and maybe 4 of those would crack my list.
Definitely Brian Wilson The Clash Outkast
Possibly: Sgt. Pepper's

I'm in the same boat. My personal faves and the records that would deserve to be archived would be very different. I might have to move some things from your list around to work in at least one country record (maybe a Johnny Cash) and a jazz record, but I think that 10 Greatest is pretty solid.

Because most of us just aren't exposed to music that many would argue should be in the top 10. I am sure if enough people discussed it for long enough, a decent list could survive. And that would be fun to see. But in general everyone is going to neglect something that should be there.
In an unrelated note, I find whenever Rolling Stone magazine does these best albums of all time list. They put entirely too much in from the 70's and 60's and completely neglect the last 20 years.
If you look most of their top 500 lists are 50% from that 20 year span.
...said the guy whose top ten list is almost entirely from the 60's and 70's. Just out of curiosity, am I the only person who thinks the White Album was the best thing the Beatles ever did?

Most definitely not, since I concur, and it's been my favorite album for over 35 years now. Some people think it's too indulgent, and that too many songs are individual efforts and don't focus on the group ethos, but all I care about are the songs themselves. I'm funny that way!

Nice point, although I'd call London Calling (released in December of 1979) an 80's album. That gives him 3 records post 1970's (4 if you count SMiLE). I think the bigger issue is how Rolling Stone tends to overinflate certain 60's and 70's records and artists on their polls and lists at the expense of the 80's 90's and 00's. But it's hard to argue against the Beatles, Beach Boys, et al, in the long run, if only for the sake of "history."

A fair criticism but my beef isn't that so many 70's and 60's records make the top 10. It is that its like if it is less than 20 years old they don't even consider putting it in the top 100. And that pisses me off.
But in all fairness anything older than the 60's i dont know to put on the album. And i didn't really want to put anything from the 80's, although its hard to overlook Thriller.

The only choice that I don't get at all is Speakerboxx/The Love Below. I understand trying to choose the best records of various eras and genres, but including an album released 18-24 months ago in a Best Albums Ever list (different to a favourites list) is a bit much. If you had to put an Outkast album on the list, you should have at least chosen Stankonia. But I digress. I don't think I'll try making a list of my own. I haven't heard a lot of the bands who are considered standards of brilliance for their time, and it's pretty boring (not to mention almost impossible) to make such a list without letting your opinions come into it.

last post for a while moving this weekend wont be on till at least monday.
anyhow.... i completely disagree about the outkast comment. so something had to be old in order to make the list? by your definition?
i have all outkast's albums, and if you were going to pick one it has to be speakerboxx/the love below. that album is a ground breaking album.
xiu xiu in 5 spot?

I think what Biggles might be referring to is the "test of time" argument, which often can be applied to Rolling Stone's picks. it goes, roughly, like this:
Sure, you like album X NOW...but will it stand the test of time? Can you be certain that you'll still love album X in 2 years? 5? 10?
Therefore, you should only select, for you Top 10 records, those that have stood the test of time by being a certain number of years old (an arbitary number) so as to prove that the album has stood the test of time. (EX: if you polled people in 1984, MANY might have selected Duran Duran's Seven and the Ragged Tiger but would regret that choice now)
Tha fallacy in the argument, however, seems to be that no arbitrarily selected number of years can ever change the fact that an album may, at any point, fall into disfavor or be replaced by something better and newer.
All that being said, I usually have to give albums a few years (2 or 3) to firm up whether they hold my interest over time, particularly after not listening to them for a while.
Member 27's list is pretty cool, although I'd have to pass on Bjork and Xiu Xiu...

What makes it groundbreaking.Ooh...it is a double album for a group.Oooh they are trying to make some kind of statement.I dont think so.New fans of outkast say stankonia or the double album.True outkast fans know when they were ground breaking...if at all. Please...speakerboxx...was another so so album. The love below was fun.The best songs from both would have been a great album. But tht fact that half of both albums contain some very weak filler content.Lags it down.I hardly believe it is that important. Outkast best work was on 'southernplayalisticcaddilac music'.Or maybe atliens...thats when they started to get big on the map.And were actually making some good music. The music they make now is trying do hard a nd reaching for greatness...but they just dont grasp it.

Well, I was going to put "Chapel of the Chimes" by Xiu Xiu instead of "Fabulous Muscles" but I thought that since its only 18 minutes long, it doesnt really count as a full album. Im a big fan of the band.

"Support Our Troops OH!" scares the hell out of me, and the title track is a pathetic attempt to shock, but Fabulous Muscles is a pretty good album. It's certainly the best thing Xiu Xiu's done so far.
And Imprezu, no offense here, but what the hell are you talking about? Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik is bland and uninteresting. ATLiens is a little better, but OutKast didn't really get good untilAquemini. I didn't think there was a single person in the universe who thinks their debut is their best album.

No love for the hip-hop classics I see....
I think these hip-hop albums should be at least considered in everyone's top 10:
Wu Tang Clan - Enter the 36 Chambers Notorious B.I.G. - Ready to Die Nas - Illmatic GZA - Liquid Swords Eric B. and Rakim - Paid In Full Xzibit - At The Speed of Life Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx Dr. Dre - The Chronic (maybe even 2001) Ultramagnetic MC's - Critcial Beatdown Big Daddy Kane - Long Live the Kane
Everyone should at least experience these 10 albums once in their lifetime. And for the cats talkin' about Outkast, I think most hip-hop heads would agree that 'ATLiens' is their best album.
