I totally agree with a lot of the picks so far, especially the National, Spoon, Radiohead, Neko Case, Elephant Micah, J. Tillman, TV on the Radio, Wilco and Sufjan Stevens, all of whom have put out consistently great music. There's also a bunch of newer artists that I'll following intently and have a lot of promise of putting out consistently great albums: the Twilight Sad, Pela, Frightened Rabbit, Grizzly Bear, A Sunny Day in Glasgow, Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Rural Alberta Advantage and probably dozens more, so I'll stop there Smiler

Now for something entirely different, here's a few picks that I don't think have been mentioned yet:

1) Gillian Welch - Along with Neko Case and Nina Nastasia, my favorite female singer/songwriters. None of them have put out a bad album and hopefully Gillian will have a new album soon.

2) Mark Lanegan - Maybe I have a thing for deep, gravelly singers, but Lanegan is arguably my favorite. Though I'm enjoyed his collaborations with Greg Dulli and Isobel Campbell, I think we're do for some more Lanegan solo albums.

3) Son Volt/Jay Farrar - Actually maybe Farrar is my favorite singer (or at least close). Besides making one of my favorite albums (Trace) and being in one my all-time favorite bands (Uncle Tupelo), he's been making consistently great music since then too.

4) King Khan - Though I've only started listening to him recently, everything I've heard from him is good. Garage rock revival done right. I could mention Billy Childish too but his back catalogue is a little intimidating may end up spending the rest of my life trying to hear it all.

5) Richard Buckner/Jason Molina/Mark Kozelak - So its actually three of my favorite singer/songwriters and RL mentioned them already, but I still have faith that they'll all be releasing solid albums ten years from now. Buckner and Molina are both due to for albums soon (Molina hasn't had a single release this year, whats up with that???) and April is my favorite album of the year.

The Magnetic Fields haven't been mentioned yet and probably should be. Probably Will Oldham too. And Damien Jurado.

I like your picks, especially those last 3, who I could've very easily put on my list. Good call on the Magnetic Fields as well. Jurado's a guy though, who's started to consistently disappoint me. His last three albums have a distinct feel to them that's very different from his previous work, or at least it seems so to me. And I can't really get into it. His music seems to have developed a kind of bitter darkness.

I've never really listened to King Khan, but I love garage rock, so I'm going to try it out now, Thanks for the rec. Big Grin

You know, I came to the sudden realization driving home today that I listen to Neon Bible fairly regularly and really enjoy it, but I haven't pulled out Funeral in months, although I still carry it with me in the car all the time. I really think, on a lot of levels, they actually improved on album 2. And I agree that they are very capable of doing it again on album 3.

So, there you go. I just validated your opinion. That should make you feel good. Smiler

You know, I totally loved Neon Bible but I'm sorry, Funeral is nothing special. I am not sure if I missed the boat or something but I jumped off that thing a long time ago. Don't get me wrong, I like the band but their debut didn't age well for me, at all.

I had that thing high on my 2004 list so I did like it but somewhere or the other I noticed that I never got the urge to pick it up off my shelf. I know I am in the minority but I'll take their dark, brooding, spacey album from last year than Funeral any day.

And Chamberk, I definitely acknowledge the appeal a band like TV on the Radio garners. I surely agree that they are an interesting group of musicians. I mean, if Bowie likes them, they must be kind of good right?

And I know you love to hate on stuff. Do you have any idea how many of your "Animal Collective sucks" posts I have read?

P.S. They don't suck.

i think you guys really have to give more weight to the age factor. radiohead are by themselves in the category of 40 years olds still making great music, and i doubt it will last much longer. look at it this way: how many artists put out their best material when they're 35+ years old? dig through the past, and there are few answers. the point of this exercise to choose bands who haven't fully proved themselves and just have the potential.

that said, i like band of horses, but i'm not sold that their style can stay fresh for 10 more years. the same applies for fleet foxes.

animal collective, even though i'm not the hugest fan, deserve mention. "Water Curses" is incredible.

others:
arctic monkeys (still so young)
vampire weekend
MIA

Fitz:

Good call on M.I.A. (although it's debatable as to whether she can be considered a band). I didn't consider her fair game for this topic or else I would have had her in my fav 5.

Maybe the thread should be done in the context of artists instead of bands.

I'm going to be self-indulgent and add another 5:

Spank Rock
Animal Collective
Wilco
Pink Paisley
Arcade Fire

Sorry, I had no idea you knew exactly what the thread starter was thinking. Most of us were answering this question:

LCD Soundsystem - Enough has already been said about LCD Soundsystem, James Murphy is a genius and he's given us no indication that he's slowing down anytime soon.

Arctic Monkeys - I love Arctic Monkeys more than the average person does, but Favourite Worst Nightmare is honestly one of the most dynamic rock albums released in the past decade. These guys are young, but Turner's songwriting is already very, very good and his musicianship is pretty solid - and he's still growing and improving. The first two albums were a little spotty but inspired, and I wouldn't be surprised if these guys pulled out a positively killer third or fourth album.

TV on the Radio - A lot has already been said about these guys. Great band, definitely worth following.

Danger Mouse - I'm not sure if he counts, but it's hard to deny the man has something going on. He's got a steady thing going with Cee-Lo and an occasional thing going with Damon Albarn, not to mention the various other projects he's worked on. And everything he's done has just been undeniably top-notch.

The Decemberists - I'm surprised they haven't been mentioned yet. I guess they haven't released an album in a couple years, but Crane Wife was an excellent album and I've got high expectations for whatever comes next.

And a few runners-up:

Kanye West (another excellent producer, but still somewhat spotty.)
Franz Ferdinand (just a whole lot of fun)
Sufjan Stevens (genius, but it's been a few years since Illinois and he still hasn't given us so much as a hint at his next project. at this point, I think he's got writer's block.)
Outkast (yeah, it's been a while, and it's not at all certain they'll ever get back together, but if they do, it will be worth the wait.)
Coldplay (you know what? I've never even liked Coldplay until Viva la Vida. and even then, I wouldn't describe myself as a fan, but it's nice to see Coldplay is actually making an earnest effort to be interesting. they've already achieved that goal, and if they push it further, they can make something really special.)

Yea!!! I thought I was the only one!!!

Now my picks, which pretty much everyone has mentioned, save one:

Radiohead
The National
Interpol
Sonic Youth (by then, they'll all pretty much be sixty, or older - which would be awesome if they kept putting out new stuff!!)

I agree to some extent. I will point out that since he released Illinois he has written some of his best material yet, but only performed it live. I'm thinking specifically of "Majesty Snowbird" and "Barn Owl Night Killer". Both show hints of sweeping orchestral works with beautiful melody and piano parts, and a fixation on birds. I'm positive the man is not idle, and I would bet money his next album is already written, recorded, and being rewritten and rerecorded constantly. He'll pull through. He's on my list though, because even if he only releases one album in the next ten years, it will be worth it.

I agree with you for the most part about Sufjan, Shad, but what has me worried is that I didn't really think the last two volumes of his Christmas package were any good, and those are the latest material he's released.

I imagine (and am hopeful) that the 5 best bands of the next 10 years will all be bands we've yet to hear from, but of those currently on the scene, these are ones I expect to continue to be relevant:

1. Arcade Fire
2. The National
3. LCD Soundsystem
4. TV on the Radio
5. The Walkmen

Some darkhorse picks include Coldplay (they seem to be turning a corner creatively and they have a huge enough fanbase intact to ensure another 10 years), Eisley (still very young and severely underappreciated - they could/should be big in the mainstream world), and The War on Drugs (I've only heard a couple tracks but they sound fantastic and I'm hopeful for their future).

I can see how that could discourage you. I really think any album he releases next will sound a lot like those, especially Volume 5, the last one. It's very orchestral, and not very "singer songwriter". I however think it's beautiful. I'm even listening to "Sister Winter" right now, and think it's one of his best songs. It's got beautiful melodies, harmonies, the instruments are varied and work together, and it is perfectly reserved through out the first 2/3 until it sort of bubbles over at the end.

the rest of the songs are great in my opinion too.. I was going to start listing my favorites, but realized I was just writing the tracklist for the disc. You seriously don't like this?

If it helps at all. I predict his next album will be very orchestral, with extended repititious overlaying compositions. But I bet after this he will return to simpler guitar and voice compositions for a while.

you are always so contentious. i'm simply suggesting people should rethink the question and narrow their focus a little bit. you don't have to be an ass, especially considering you're a mod.

As a fellow member of these forums, I am allowed to share my opinion, right? And I felt that your "suggestion" (although you didn't friendly suggest anything, you told everyone what "the point of this exercise was") was wrong so I let you know what we were answering.

I may be a moderator but I should be allowed to share my opinion and in this case, I was letting you know what the thread starter intended.
