How about Andrew Bird? I think his solo stuff is way more interesting than his Bowl of Fire albums (although The Swimming Hour is pretty good)

I like Ben Folds a lot, but I disagree about his solo stuff being better. I'll take Whatever and Ever Amen and The Unauthorized Biography over Rockin' the Suburbs and Songs for Silverman almost any day.

When I think of artists such as Elvis Costello, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen or Ben Folds, I don't think of the Attractions, the Heartbreakers, The E Street Band or the Five (which was really three, wasn't it?). Those guys should not be included, IMO.

In the case of Tom Petty, most of the Heartbreakers played on his "solo" albums and toured with him in support of those albums.

I'm throwing out a big disagreement for Ben Folds. Ben Folds Five had such amazing chemistry. I saw them live close to a dozen times (I was a bit of a groupieSmiler, and they were unbelievable each and everytime. I've seen Ben on his own a handful of times, and I still enjoy him immensely, but something is missing. I think the three albums from Ben Folds Five are all near perfect, but when I listen to his solo albums I find myself skipping and even cringing once in awhile. Sigh, I'd give anything to have the Five back.

I think Neil Young is the most obvious pick for this category. If this was a publication, his picture would forefront the text. After Buffalo Springfield and CSNY, he became one of the greatest artists of all-time.

What band was Bob Dylan in? He started solo.
PJ Harvey - I read that To Bring You My Love was her first solo album and before that PJ Harvey was the name of the band. But I've always thought of her as a solo artist. And whether she was better from TBYML is debatable, anyway.

I'd probably agree with that. Although, I like early Genesis stuff, so it's still close.

I definitely like Dizzee Rascal better than Roll Deep.

I'm not sure how many this will ring a bell for but Matthew Good has really come out on his own for his solo carreer. Sure, Matthew Good Band was more of an arena popular success, but his solo act has really given him room to expand and grow beyond the confines of the band.

I think Serj Tankian is better with System of a Down instead of solo. But that's cuz I love SOAD.

peace.

I believe the original point of this topic was that an artist's solo career is shadowed by their stint in a more well known or well regarded band, so I guess you're just reiterating that point ?

Anyways, totally agree with Elliott Smith, mentioned above. Heatmiser was pretty good but in no way comes close to the genius of his solo albums. I'd also say Mark Lanegan's solo career is stronger than the Screaming Trees.

That's an interesting one. I love the Screaming Trees, so I'm not totally buying it, but Lanegan's solo career has been pretty impressive, and more varied. I could go either way, really.

You are quite misinformed my friend. Bob Dylan started as a solo artist. The Traveling Wilburys were a sort of songwriting supergroup that began close to the end of the 80's I believe. Consisting of George Harrison, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, and Bobby D, I'm pretty sure that would have been one hell of a band to have began together. They were just a fun side project with friends. They had a few megahits, namely "Handle with Care" and "End of the Line".

Ha. no. I know that. My post was sort of a joke. The topic never stated that the band career had to come before the solo career though.

Ooh, in that case Brendon Benson solo is miles better than the Raconteurs.

Maybe I am just reiterating that point, but I think that it varies between artist. Serj Tankian is still really well known for "Elect The Dead" but I think that some artists are mainly known for their first really famous band. SOAD is a nu metal legend and has been a band for many years. Many music fans that have been liking the band from the start associate the solo artist with his or original band. Like many Slipknot fans think of Slipknot when they heard Corey Taylor instead of Stone Sour. I happen to like SOAD better than Tankian's solo stuff and that's just my opinion. Other people could be the opposite and think of SOAD as a thing from the past that's shadowed by Elect The Dead. So I guess my point is that it varies between bands and artists.

Sorry Eric, I wasn't really paying attention. If the band doesn't have to come before then you could say just about any solo artist, as they probably were in a side project band at some time.
