I want to see some serious lists if you choose to participate AND I'd like to see as many people as possible post lists, like the 2005 year-end list (which, recently looking through that thread, was really awesome).
Some things to consider, if you will:
1) Overall quality (i.e.: content)
2) Significance (i.e.: context)
3) Impact that these records will have/have had/is having on the latter half of this ongoing decade.
There's a Best Songs: '00 - '04 thread here in Best of 2004, but General Discussion seemed like a better place for this discussion. That was my call. MODS: If it needs to be moved, then let it be moved post-haste.
I will post my list this weekend. Hope to see some good input from you smart, smart folks.
1. Modest Mouse-"The Moon and Antarctica" 2. Richard Buckner- "The Hill" 3. Radiohead-"Kid A" 4 Wilco-"Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" 5. Interpol- "Turn on the Bright Lights" 6. Spoon- "Kill the Moonlight" 7. Hail to the Thief - Radiohead. 24. White Blood Cells - The White Stripes. 25. Chutes Too Narrow - The Shins.
Context: The Strokes, Is This It? No brainer, even if their public act is a little stale now. They started a trend with more than a few wannabe torchbearers still releasing debuts.
Content: Super Furry Animals, Rings Around the World A near perfect union of technical ability and artistic vision. They seem like the kind of band that makes exactly what they meant to — no happy accidents.
Convergence: Danger Mouse, The Grey Album Now we can't get rid of him. First Gorillaz, then DangerDoom, now Gnarls Barkley. He's to the 00s what Automator was to the 90s.
Con: The Arcade Fire, Funeral Sorry, I couldn't resist.
Only one of these would make my Top 25 if I sat down to make one. No, it's not The Arcade Fire.

Sorry, Yay, I know you wanted a comprehensive list, but I have neither the time nor energy to comb through five years worth of albums right now. At least this wll give you some more to look at. I don't think I have included anything prior to 2000 or later than 2004. I think maybe the top 5 are pretty close to how I would rank them, but after that there is no order.
1. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots - Flaming Lips 2. Franz Ferdinand - FF 3. A Grand Don't Come for Free - The Streets 4. Madvillainy - Madvillain 5. Stankonia - Outkast 6. Original Pirate Material - The Streets 7. Rounds - Four Tet 8. Boy in da Corner - Dizzee Rascal 9. Turn On the Bright Lights - Interpol 10. Vespertine - Bjork 11. Cold House - Hood 12. Kill the Moonlight - Spoon 13. Grey Album - Danger Mouse 14. Bows & Arrows - Walkmen 15. Is This It - The Strokes 16. The Futureheads - Futureheads 17. Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus - Nick Cave...Bad Seeds 18. Yours, Mine, and Ours - Pernice Brothers 19. Stumble Into Grace - Emmylou Harris 20. Welcome Interstate Managers - Fountains of Wayne 21. Phrenology - Roots 22. We Love Life - Pulp

I have nothing to do, so here's my painstaking list. More emphasis on influence than quality.
01 Radiohead - Kid A 02 The Postal Service - Give Up 03 Kanye West - The College Dropout 04 Eminem - Marshall Mathers LP 05 Jay-Z - The Black Album 06 Danger Mouse - The Grey Album 07 Outkast - Stankonia 07 The White Stripes - White Blood Cells 09 Prefuse 73 - One Word Extinguisher 10 Bjork - Vespertine 11 Four Tet - Rounds 12 Mastodon - Leviathan 13 The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium 14 System of a Down - Toxicity 15 Tool - Lateralus 16 Sigur Ros - Ágætis Byrjun 17 Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Yr Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven 18 Explosions in the Sky - The Earth is Not A Cold, Dead Place 19 Mogwai - Rock Action 20 Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot 21 Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head 21 Death Cab for Cutie - Transatlanticism 23 Iron and Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days 24 The New Pornographers - Mass Romantic 25 The Darkness - Permission to Land
If I were to really get serious, I'd have to take a week off from work and tell my family to move out because I only have time to listen to music for that week. Instead, I spent some time today remembering, considering and trying to find all my albums after my move last month. I'm sure I'm missing stuff, but this is my monochromatic list as of now, and I only used one criteria: quality.
1. Kid A by Radiohead 2. The Swimming Hour by Andrew Bird’s Bowl of Fire 3. Behind the Music by the Soundtrack of Our Lives 4. Songs From the City, Songs From the Sea by PJ Harvey 5. Love and Theft by Bob Dylan 6. Van Lear Rose by Loretta Lynn 7. White Blood Cells by the White Stripes 8. Sea Change by Beck 9. Hail to the Thief by Radiohead 10. A Ghost is Born by Wilco 11. Elephant by the White Stripes 12. At Dawn by My Morning Jacket 13. New Roman Times by Camper van Beethoven 14. Amnesiac by Radiohead 15. Chutes Too Narrow by the Shins 16. Speakerboxx/The Love Below by Outkast 17. Magic and Medicine by the Coral 18. One Beat by Sleater-Kinney 19. Mermaid Avenue Vol. II by Billy Bragg and Wilco 20. Stephen Malkmus 21. Ways and Means by Paul Kelly 22. B.R.M.C. by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club 23. Life on Other Planets by Supergrass 24. Rings Around the World by Super Furry Animals 25. Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds 25. Since I Left You by the Avalanches

Who is The Darkness influencing? I don't see alot of borderline-parody hair metal bands out there, unless you count the fact that Buckcherry just released another album.

Blur - Think Tank
This is a good one. I had sort of forgotten this, and it should probably be on my list. "Think Tank" is a fantastic album.
