I am totally aware of how pretentious and extremely stupid it sounds if I say that I may have found my best-of-2009 album when I'm still undecided about my 2008 top spot, so (after 6 listenings, having heard most of the songs before Live and knowing AC and well, my taste, so it's not completely unbased) I'll say this:

If Merriweather Post Pavillion turns out not to be the best album of 2009 then we have one hell of a year ahead of us!
I'm supposed to be studying but I can't stop listening to this!
I was a bit worried about this one. I thought it might be even poppier then SJ and well, it is. And it is ridiculously AMAZING!

God I love this band!

The year hasn't started yet and we've already got 3 great albums (AC, AB, AJ). It's gonna be a good year.

I think JACOK meant Antony and the Johnsons.

GREAT start to 2009.

Antony and the Johnsons: The Crying Light
Superb album.

Animal Collective: Merriweather Post Pavilion
Another great release for AC.

Sin Fang Bous: Clangour
Awesome debut album from lead singer of Seabear.

Andrew Bird: Noble Beast
Good effort. Another good record to add to his collection.

...and it's not even 2009 yet!

This is the lamest thread I've ever seen. AC album is lame upon first listen. Sung Tongs was where it was at. None of this Strawberry Jam and Merriweather poop.

I'm looking forward to that one. I found their album a bit averagey, but I saw them live this year and totally loved them. Was hoping for a new album of theirs, to hopefully build on their potential, but hopefully his solo album will do in the meantime.

My main one I am looking forward to is:

Loney dear- Dear John

That chap can't put a foot wrong for me. It's surely going to be great.

Phosphorescent - "To Willie"

For all those who love Phosphorescent and Willie Nelson. This is an album of Willie Nelson covers, which include some of Phosphorescent's best work yet. My fave of 09, narrowly edging J. Tillman for the top spot.

It ain't hallelujah, but it might as well have been.

In the absence of a year end list thread...

1. Vacilando Territory Blues - J. Tillman
2. The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart
3. Decent Work For Decent Pay, Collected Works Volume One - Diplo
4. Noble Beast - Andrew Bird
5. Here We Go Magic - Here We Go Magic

6. Dance Mother - Telepathe
7. Dissolver - Iran
8. Painting Sky Together - Tomasz Bednarczyk
9. Get Guilty - A.C. Newman

Undecided on/Listening to...

On The Ground - Peasant
Merriweather Post Pavilion - Animal Collective
The Crying Light - Antony & The Johnsons
Boom - Anjulie
Gutter Tactics - Dalek

Checkmate Savage - The Phantom Band
Mirror Eye - Psychic Ills
Prot - Oba Masahiro
Clangour - Sin Fang Bous
Of Cities - DJ Signify

For those interested, the less obvious stuff - The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart is pop/indie reminiscent of The Smiths, Diplo's release is a very dope comp of his work to date, Here We Go Magic is killer pyschedelic folk, Telepathe are like High Places, just better, and Tomasz Bednarczyk is polish ambient.

I would strongly recommend the J. Tillman, Telepathe, Diplo, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Here We Go Magic and Andrew Bird albums. Althoghu I have only listened to them once, the Peasant(American folk), Antony & The Johnsons and Oba Masahiro (Japanese ambient) albums sound very good as well.

Recommendation: DM Stith

For fans of Grizzly Bear, Department of Eagles, Sufjan Stevens.

I mention the latter because he is signed to Sufjan's record label, Sufjan appears on his EP, Curtain Speech and because he incorperates strings and piano into his songs a lot like Sufjan.

His debut LP will be coming out in March, (called Heavy Ghost) and I'm very confident that it will be just awesome. He's one of those guys where I can't imagine him writing a bad song.

Keep him on your radar.

He reminds me a lot of Patrick Watson. The same sortof dreamy fantasy piano pop that seems like it was written to be performed on a stage.

All of the albums I listed are. Or else I wouldn't have been able to listen to them. And then list them.

Its feels incredibly premature to already start a list of my favourite 2009 albums...but what the hell.

Howling Bells - Radio Wars
Susumu Yokota - Mother
J. Tillman - Vacilando Territory Blues
KEITH - Vice & Virtue

Am currently downloading The Crying Light after all the great things I've heard about it.
