I live in a place where it is not very easy to watch non American movies, but from what I have watched I am in love with:
1. The Return (Made in Russia) it is my all time favorite film, does anyone know that film? no one mentioned it
2. The Son's Room (Made in Italy) 3. in the mood for love (Hong Kong) 4. Amelie (France) 5. Life Is Beautiful (Italy)
I can not add at the moment but there lots which i want to watch, hope i can do so soon! Eureka (Japan) is it good? one of the online reviews say it is the best movie ever made, any one have seen this film?

I haven't seen Eureka, but I recently saw a phenomenal Korean film called "Untold Scandal", which is a Korean version of "Dangerous Liasions". It was FAR superior than the Malkovich version or the Colin Firth version. Unfortunately, it is in VERY limited release at this time, and I only saw it because I'm a member of the Trenton (NJ) Film Society, and they showed it a couple of weeks ago. If you check out their website (I found it through IMDB), they list some of the cities where the film will be shown. Again, it's not much which is very disappointing, as it is one of the best films I've seen in 2004, and would crack my Top 10 (mentioned in this topic a few months ago) for Foreign Films.

Just to clarify, "The Ruling Class" is a British film with Peter O'Toole playing the heir to a British lordship who thinks he's Jesus Christ (and later on, somebody else famous.) It's not in a foreign language, but what the hay? It's well-worth watching and discussing.

Hey Donnie...I absoultlely adored "The Return". I just bought it on DVD and saw it twice in theaters. Excellent acting, script, direction, etc. Definitely the best Russian movie since Tarkovsky. There is a huge difference between what I think is the best and my favs, so I decided to write my favs seeing as it seems more appropriate.
1) The Rules of the Game (Renoir) 2) L'Avventura (Antonioni) 3) Armacord (Fellini) 4) L'Atalante (Vigo) 5) Seven Samurai (Kurosawa) 6) Blissfully Yours (Weersathakul) 7) What Time is it There? (Tsai) 8) Flowers of Shanghai (Hou) 9) TIE - Through the Olive Trees & And Life Goes On (Kiarostami) 10) TIE - Rosetta & The Son (Dardenne)
I would definitely say that the best living foreign filmmaker (to an American anyway) is Hou Hsia-hsien. There is no question. Others include Olivier Assayas, Wong Kar-wei, Abbas Kiarostami, Tsai-Ming Liang, Apichatong Weersathakul, Godard (of course), Ousmane Sembene, and Werner Herzog.

As with anything I could mention, if you love it and it makes you happy, then I'm all for it. However, I do believe that a little of Tati goes a long way. I don't think he compares to Chaplin or Rene Clair, but I do prefer his earlier stuff, so "Mr. Hulot's Holiday" or "My Uncle" are among his best. "The Red Balloon" has been one of my favorites ever since I saw it at one of those after-school movies in 1963. Pay 10 cents, get a bag of popcorn and sit on the floor. "The Red Balloon" was written and directed by Albert Lamorisse and starred his son as the balloon's friend. Lamorisse also did the short film "White Mane". Hasn't anyone around here seen "Z", "My Father's Glory", "Cyrano de Bergerac" (with Depardieu) or "Jesus of Montreal"?

Mark: How is the Lamorisse short film, "White Mane," And do you know how i can see it. The Red Balloon has been a childhood favorite, to this day after studying film i am still found in my seat/bed (wherever i am watching it) amazed at the livelihood of a balloon that has once given all of us comfort and a kinship at some point in out lives.
As for Tati, i would argue that his films only get better as he masters his own Tativille (in the general sense not Playtime). He ends up only using his character "Hulot" to introduce themes and casts of charachters or even a parallel world. (ie Playtime (where the lead actor was a functional crafty(or un-crafty) city)) ((( i love parenthesis))). As i Also Love TATI.
Storm chaser:
Thanks. I'm sure you right about having at least one Kurasowa film on the list, but I have, however, not seen many films of his. I have seen Seventh Samurai, and it is a great film, but personally it doesn't affect as much as the rest. I should see more Kurasowa, especially Dreams, or at least High and Low.
I also need more Godard. He deserves it.

If you check out my original post, it allows that it might be confusing, but it's meant for non-English-language films, so you're on the right track. There must be some more you can share now.
