I've just recently seen this movie and was totally mesmerized by it. If anyone out there has seen it, I would greatly appreciate my reading your views about it.
To tell you the truth, frank, it's been almost 30 years since I've seen this at the theatre, and I don't remember seeing it since. The thing I really remember about it is that the early scenes in the snow were suspenseful, yet beautiful. The photography shows a vast Siberian landscape which seems to dwarf the human characters. But despite a seemingly-simple and low-key plot, the film thoroughly depicts the characters' growing friendship while allegorically depicting the relationship between humanity and nature. I really need to watch the film again to remember the details better!

Strangely enough, I've had this film out from the library in Portland Oregon three times and never watched it. I've seen it absolutely panned by Kurosawa critics.
