Ummm....yeah. Thank you for totally ruining the movie for all us who have NOT seen "Garden State" yet. It'd be nice if you had a spoiler warning or something like that!
Sorry about that, Eccentro. I've not seen the film, so I don't know if that was a spoiler, but it sure seems like it could be. I wish I had caught it sooner.
NABRAJJ, please read the General Forum Guidelines and Code of Conduct, especially number 9 regarding the posting of possible spoilers. If you have any questions, you may address them in a private message to me.

No, I actually think it was just a metaphor for the way his life was going and his state of mind. As you probably noticed, there is a very similar scene at the end in which he behaves differently.

Garden State is a good film, maybe even a great one for those film students who really enjoyed the Graduate. My main issue with it was that it seemed too hung up on itself to let its own naturally charm tell the story on its own. Instead, we were left with elongated conversations that seemed unecessary, (near the end, Andrew's conversation with the dad), or counter productive, (when Mark comments after giving back the jewelry he had stolen from Andrew's mother). In both instances, the film would have done better to let the well-selected soundtrack do all the talking, or, even better, allow for simple contemplative silence.
