At first, before I found out this movie was a foreign film, I thought it didnt look that great and looked too much like some other movie. But than a couple months ago, I read the full description of the plot and found out it was in mandarin. Recently I've been reading the reviews and they are almost all excellent. I am curious to know if anyone has seen this movie yet and how other people think of it.

I just saw Hero and it was excellent. It was an epic. It included amazing action scenes but messages behind them as well. I believe overall it was a great movie and everyone reading this should see it.
Hero has been available in Vancouver for at least two years through the huge asian dvd market we have here. Don't blame England, blame Miramax, it was sitting on their shelf for a long time!

I could be wrong about this, S, but have you taken this to its (il)logical conclusion? "Hero" was nominated for a Best Foreign Language Oscar two years ago, and there's some arcane AMPAS rule which allows foreign films to "enter" back into "the race" later on. Remember last year when "City of God" got all those nominations for Director, Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing. I think Miramax was shooting for Best Picture but didn't quite make it. Well, "City of God" came out the same year as "Hero", but somehow didn't get a Foreign Film nomination. I'm thinking that Miramax is going to push "Hero" in all the major categories. I don't know if they can because even I don't remember a two-year gap before, but that may explain why it's taken so long to be released to theatres in the U.S.

Interesting theory Mark, and probably bang on! It seems to me that Miramax and the Weinstein's place a lot of importance on receiving awards. This tactic would not surprise me at all, as they seem to want their egos stroked at every possible turn! On a similar note, I know that Miramax had been having problems deciding what to do with Shaolin Soccer, figuring that Western audiences would not be in tune with the humour in it. Personally, I thought it was quite funny and I think Miramax will probably end up releasing it unedited now, as they begin to see the financial success of Hero. Here's hoping!

Now that i think back on it, Hero wasnt nearly as good as crouching tiger hidden dragon in my opinion. I cant exactly explain why, it just seemed to be missing something or... well i dont know, i just am not nearly as enthusiastic about it as i was before.

I actually think you're right Know it all, I preferred Crouching Tiger too, I just thought it was a more...complete film, if that makes any sense. I just think the only thing wrong with Hero was that it was much too short.
