the best russian film that i can recall is 'burnt by the sun', directed by mikhalov, who is wierdly doing a burnt by the sun 2 - literally that is how its titled, even in russian.
the film is a nice complement for any student of modern russian history, especially the period of stalin's repression. you can see this film and read babel's 'red cavalry' to see how the commies ate their own.
thx pgmtag for the lis of Russian movies, maybe you can add their original Russian naming (makes it easier to find)?
As for the best Russian movie I have ever seen, it must be STALKER by Andrei Tarkovski...this movie is also my number 1 movie of all time.
So much important life(intelectual, existential...) themes come out in this movie its overwhelming..and the way it has been shot is a masterpiece by itself.
Tarkovski is like a Reinessance artist closed in 1 form.
I'm not overly familiar with Russian cinema (some Tarkovsky, some Eisenstein)--but I just wanted to add Alexander Dovzhenko's "Earth". oh yeah--and Dziga Vertov's "Man with a Movie Camera"--now that's an amazing movie.
I've been trying to watch some Russian movies recently, so far not very successful, LOL, but I'm getting there. I really want to see some of Andrey Tarkovski, I've never seen anything by him, but I really want to seeing as how his movies are considered probably the hight of Russian cinema.
From the movies that I have seen, I have to say my favorite is 2004 movie The Return (Vozvraschenie). Amazing film, simply brilliant. I also really like The Prisoner of the Mountain (Kavkazkiy Plennik), Russian Ark (Russki Kovcheg) and The Thief (Vor).
my favorites are office romance (slujebnii roman), irony of fate (s lehkim parom), all the shurik movies, the adventures of italians in russia (priklucheniya italianzov v rosiye), ivan the terrible changes his profession (ivan vasilievich menayet profesiyu), carnival night (karnavalnaya noch) and starayi klyachi, not sure how to translate that.
i want to see moscow does not believe in tears (moskva ne veryet v slezi).
they go to the country that they only know.
