I've said what you said too many times. The worst movies I've seen this year also happened to be the most expensive: Spiderman 3, Pirates of the Carribean 3, and Transformers. While all contained some impressive special effects, neither told a coherent enough story to actually entertain me. I'm certain that good special effects and a good story aren't mutually exclusive things, so I'm always baffled how a studio can justify dumping hundreds of millions of dollars into a movie and not even bother developing a decent (not even great, just decent!) script.
I didn't see Spidey or POTC 3, but I did see Transformers. I don't know, I guess I generally liked it. It was waaaaay too long, and I was kind of pissed there weren't more Transformers (particularly Autobots) and that Megatron didn't transform into a big-ass gun, but it did pretty much what I thought it would, mainly offer up some kick-ass eye candy(Megan Fox included). There was also a sentimental aspect since Transformers are my favorite toy of all time. I wouldn't consider it overrated because really, did anyone really expect it to be a hard-hitting, thought-provoking sci-fi thriller?
I still think Transformers: The Movie is better.

A similar question can be asked of "300". Who was expecting a movie advertised with the promise of violence to be more than it was? The only real disappointment for me was that the big, fat monster with sword-hands was only seen as much as he was in the trailer! I thought he was gonna fight.

I dunno. Those friggin' rock songs every few minutes and Spike's little Ani-like son tend to grate the nerves!

Sure, I might offend a few of the blue-noses with my cocky stride and musky odor - oh, I'll never be the darling of the so-called 'City Fathers' who cluck their tongues, stroke their beards, and talk about what's to be done with this Monkey_Boy?!"

Granted. But you didn't hear from him as much as you did the rock songs, "Spike Jr."... or the Micro-Machines guy. (Good gravy, what were they thinking with the Micro-Machines guy? ) Don't think I'm trying to put it down, I did like it when I was a kid and I own it on DVD. It's just when I watched it as an adult, there were a few things that really got to me, and those 3 things were at the top o' the list!

Originally posted by tabuno: Boy, I'm really striking the bottom here as a minority but...it's the truth...I really enjoyed Spiderman Three and I've put it on my top ten list of best movies of 2007 (tentatively hanging onto the seventh spot). I found the themes of betrayal and the tension between good and evil, the not so evil badguy fascinating to watch in the movie. I understood and felt what was going on. For me it was compelling stuff for the mainstream audience. Most of the severe complaints seem to come from those comicbook fans who demanded more from this movie. I for one didn't.
I enjoyed Spidey 3 too. I saw it for the first time last week. I was expecting the worst. I was thoroughly entertained.
Transformers was one of the biggest, lamest piles of horseshit i've ever seen, unless you're 12 or younger. It was like Happy Feet with Robots. God is was lame.
I have not seen many movies this year because I haven't seen any advertisements that have lured me to them. But, I was lured to No Country for Old Men by the fact that it was made by the Coen Brothers and by the fact that it received so many raves from critics. It was entertaining throughout but left me with bitter disappointment. Overrated.

asc85 Know-It-All Posted 26 December 2007 06:10 AM Hide Post Keeping with the topic that these films were NOT bad...just overrated (in no particular order):
1. No Country for Old Men 2. Ratatouille 3. Juno 4. Atonement 5. Sweeney Todd
All these films received very high Meta-Critic ratings, and I just didn't see it. None of these were bad, but just weren't very good, IMHO.
While I haven't see Juno or Atonement yet, the other three movies that you have mentioned do appear in my opinion to be overrated. There are good movies but they don't have the integrity of great movies.

(Hope I did the "quote" part right).
I really had no desire to see "Atonement". Basically, I thought of Dennis Green shouting at the press conference after he barely lost to the Bears that, "They are who we thought they are!"
I knew that this was going to be one of those overblown spectacle films like "The English Patient" and "Out of Africa." But, because of the critical acclaim and nominations, I wanted to at least say that I saw it. I can see why others will like it, but I don't usually appreciate those kinds of movies.

Fascinating. There is the really bad movie sleep and then there is a really sleepy sleep what was that movie sleep.

also i saw your earlier post y did u think 'no country for old men' was overrated?
I assume I'm one of the few people who feel that No Country for Old Men was over-rated. I have a long list of cinematic problems with this movie that I won't go into unless one really wants to discuss this movie in-depth over a long period of time, more appropriately on a thread devoted exclusively to this movie. But just one example and that was the very first part of the movie with the scene of the character Anton being arrested and being held by a local small town law enforcement officer - so predictable, like a low-budget movie - as what happens from there it was mostly downhill from there as similar cinematic plot flaws continued all the way through the movie.

Several movies that were overrated: Spider-Man 3 Shrek 3 Pirates 3 Transformers
And by the way, is it just me or does tabuno seem to think every movie that was praised by critics is overrated? you didn't like Ratatouille, No Country for Old Men, or Sweeney Todd? strange...

I agree with you about the strangeness. This year, in reviewing my movies that I enjoyed and thought were very good with film critics and award nominations, I have ended up confusing even myself and yes, I apparently disagree with almost everyone else this year as to what the best movies of 2007 have been. Apparently I'm seeing something different or not seeing something that other are. But I do have my explanation for my choices and for those movies I felt just didn't live up to the ratings that people are given them.
